The Dutchman is reportedly an alternative to Ezequiel Garay to be added to the bid as Real Madrid prefer to cash in on the Argentine

Real Madrid have put together a new offer of €25 million plus midfielder Royston Drenthe for Benfica left-back Fabio Coentrao, according to news daily A BOLA.

The Spanish club have been hot on the trail of the 23-year-old defender since the end of last season, but their unwillingness to meet the player’s release clause has prevented a deal from happening.

Reports in Portugal initially suggested Real Madrid were open to the idea of including defender Ezequiel Garay in their offer for Coentrao, in a bid to lower the transfer fee, but A BOLA claims the Spanish capital club want to cash in on the defender after receiving offers in the region of €10 million for him.

As a result, Madrid are adding Drenthe to the negotiations’ table, as the Dutch player has long been the subject of attention from Benfica.

The Netherlands international, who joined Madrid from Feyenoord in 2007 for €13 million, was linked with a move to Benfica last summer already, but ended up joining Hercules on loan.

Portuguese sources suggest Benfica’s interest in the player has not diminished and the negotiations between the two clubs could register a significant advance in the next few days in light of this move.
