Wolfsburg have played down reports of interest in Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, who is being tracked by Chelsea and Liverpool.

Goal revealed that the Midlands outfit will demand £30 million (€42m) for a striker rejuvenated under Tim Sherwood, having scored 11 goals since his appointment on February 14 – more than any other Premier League player in the intervening period.

Sherwood had since admitted he cannot force Benteke to stay at Villa Park, while Goal understands Chelsea are weighing up a move, with Jose Mourinho likening the player to club legend Didier Drogba.

Wolfsburg manager Klaus Allofs has praised Benteke’s talents but admitted any deal is unlikely with Villa demanding such a fee, reportedly telling Bild: “He is a good player.

“[But] we must not confuse our team structure … we already have good strikers.”

Wolfsburg face a struggle to keep hold of one of their own, with former Chelsea man Kevin De Bruyne understood to be a target for Manchester City as part of a significant overhaul of their ageing squad.
