Seamus Coleman is the perfect player for Manchester United, according to former Arsenal star David O’Leary.

O’Leary believes that Coleman is among the best full-backs in Europe and said that he could not believe the player was not signed by United during David Moyes’ tenure.

The former Sligo Rovers defender has become a mainstay at Goodison Park under three different managers and has been linked with a move to Old Trafford on a number of occasions.

An admirer of the 28-year-old, O’Leary revealed that he even attempted to convince his former club Arsenal to take a chance on Coleman a number of years ago, but noted that the emergence of Hector Bellerin scuppered any such move.

“Seamus Coleman has been as good a full-back as anyone for a long, long time,” O’Leary told RTE 2fm. “I was trying to push him Arsenal’s way but we had a young lad coming through, [Hector] Bellerin.

“I can’t believe a few years ago, particularly when Fergie went, Man Utd [didn’t sign him]. I thought he was absolutely spot on for Manchester United, the way they want to play, the way the lad plays.

Coleman scored in Everton’s 2-1 win over Arsenal on Tuesday, bringing his tally for the season to three goals in 13 league appearances.
