The England international is seen as the perfect forward to end Slaven Bilic’s problems up front, with the Irons hopeful he can be tempted back to his boyhood club

West Ham are planning a £6 million bid for Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe, according to The Sun.

Slaven Bilic is looking to add a goalscorer to his squad after a series of issues up front at the London Stadium this season.

Summer signings Simone Zaza and Jonathan Calleri have both struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League while Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho have missed long periods with injury.

And it is hoped Defoe could be tempted to return to his boyhood club after he left to join Tottenham in 2004.
