The France international could be set for a surprise return to Ligue 1, with his former club eager to bring him back to his homeland

Dimitri Payet could be set for a shock return to former club Marseille for a sum ranging from €30 million to €40m, according to Telefoot.

The France international has been linked with a move away from West Ham United in January, and the Ligue 1 side are keen to bring him back from the Premier League.

Last month, the 29-year-old midfielder hinted that a transfer back to Marseille could be possible, telling SFR Sport: “Marseille have a new project which seems interesting. Aside from that, we are obviously waiting to see the first few things that the new owners do, but Marseille knows how attached I am to the club.”

However, West Ham co-chairman David Gold said in July that the club would not entertain offers of less than £50m for Payet, and Marseille may have to increase their bid to sign their target.
