Sydney FC sign Dutch defender Buijs
The Sky Blues have moved quickly to allay their defensive crisis with Graham Arnold’s extensive Dutch contacts helping out
Sydney FC have reinforced the centre of their defence with the signing of former Eredivisie-based defender Jordy Buijs.
With Matt Jurman having left the club for Suwon Bluewings and Seb Ryall injuring his hamstring last week, Sydney will be undermanned at centre-back when they host Western Sydney Wanderers in the derby on Saturday night.
But the Sky Blues will have one more option next week with Buijs – a former De Graafschap and NAC Breda player in his native Netherlands – having signed until the end of the season.

The contract also includes an option for next season.
Sydney have also been heavily linked with Perth Glory’s Rhys s and Michael Thwaite of Liaoning Whowin but eventually utilised their remaining import spot to bring in Buijs.
“We look forward to Jordy coming over to Australia and helping to continue our undefeated start to the season,” Sydney coach Graham Arnold said in a statement.
“He comes with a very strong pedigree of over 200 games in the top-flight Eredivisie in Holland.
“He is a free-kick specialist and like our other four foreign players we expect him to improve our squad enormously.
“He was unfortunate that his last club in Romania went bankrupt last month, but it means he comes to us fit and ready to play.
“He has a good reputation and comes highly recommended from our Dutch network of contacts.”
Buijs came up through the ranks at Feyenoord but never played a senior game at the club before joining De Graafschap in 2008.
After four years with De Graafschap, he moved to NAC Breda – one of Arnold’s former clubs – in 2011 and played three seasons there before stints at Heerenveen, Roda JC and Romanian club Pandurii Targu Jiu.
The 28-year-old can also play defensive midfield and right-back.
