The striker was pictured holding the shirt of a Russian Premier League club, leading to speculation that he had transferred from Turkey

Samuel Eto’o sent the rumour mill into overdrive on Thursday after posing for a photo with an Amkar Perm shirt, leading many to believe he had signed for the Russian Premier League club.

Amkar posted a cryptic photo of the Cameroonian attacker on their official Twitter account, sparking a flood of reports claiming former Barcelona and Inter star Eto’o had sealed a return to Russia.

No treble and no Copa for Zidane’s Madrid

However, the photo opportunity came about because of the 35-year-old’s close relationship with manager Gadzhi Gadzhiyev, who had coached Eto’o during his spell at Anzhi Makhachkala.

Eto’o currently plays in Turkey for Antalyaspor, whose coach denied speculation that the forward was leaving the club – following media reports of interest from Fenerbahce and Besiktas

Amkar were also forced to play down the stories, with general director Igor Rezvukhin telling Sport express: “Eto’o is our friend, don’t try to find something more in this case.

“Our coach knows Samuel so they decided to take a photo. Is Eto’o coming to Amkar? Of course not. In the future? It is sport, it is football, so who knows?”
