Newcastle 4-0 Tottenham: Player ratings as Isak punishes woeful Spurs performance

Newcastle United took another huge step towards European qualification when they beat Tottenham 4-0 at St James’ Park on Saturday lunchtime.

The Magpies punished some dismal Spurs defending during an end-to-end first half, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon firing home from close range within two minutes of one another.

Isak proved the thorn in Spurs’ side again after the break and netted early in the second half to secure a crucial three points for the hosts, with Fabian Schar rubbing salt in the Spurs wounds with a late header.

How the game unfolded

Injuries forced Eddie Howe into a formation change for Spurs’ visit, with Newcastle starting with three at the back. It made for an entertaining and open start to proceedings, with Timo Werner firing the first opportunity of the game over the crossbar from close range.

Werner was guilty of spurning another promising opening shortly afterwards and the German’s wastefulness was punished on the half-hour mark by Isak. The Swede was released by Gordon’s through ball and proceeded to sit Micky van de Ven on the ground before firing a brilliant effort beyond Guglielmo Vicario.

It took just over a minute for Newcastle to double their lead as memories of last season’s 6-1 defeat in this fixture started to flood the brains of the Tottenham players. Pedro Porro’s awful back pass was pounced upon by Gordon inside the penalty area, with the winger skinning Van de Ven again before curling into the back of the net.

Isak was close to grabbing his second as Spurs’ defence was split open once more, but a last-ditch challenge from Destiny Udogie spared the visitors’ blushes. The forward continued to torment the Lilywhites as the half drew to a close, heading just wide from a corner after an impressive leap.

Tottenham felt somewhat aggrieved not to have been awarded a penalty just three minutes before half-time, Dan Burn making contact with Rodrigo Bentancur in the box with a high boot as he cleared a Spurs attack.

Any hopes of a Spurs comeback were extinguished within just six minutes of the restart, with Isak the difference-maker for Newcastle once more. A simple ball in behind from Bruno Guimaraes sent the 24-year-old through on goal and he made no mistake in calmly slotting beyond Vicario to put the game to bed.

Isak then came within inches of claiming his hat-trick after a near-post header from a free kick, with Elliot Anderson testing Vicario with a stinging effort just after the hour mark. Emil Krafth also came close to a rare goal as his bouncing effort clipped the base of the post with ten minutes to play.

Tottenham’s passive defending was punished for a final time with three minutes to play, Schar rising highest from a corner to head beyond Vicario for a Newcastle fourth. It capped a wonderful display from Howe’s men, with Spurs outfought and outclassed at St James’ Park.

GK: Martin Dubravka – 6/10 – A surprisingly quiet afternoon for the Newcastle stopper, who did have one nervy moment when spilling a simple Werner effort.

CB: Emil Krafth – 7/10 – Not an orthodox central defender but he didn’t look out of place on the right-hand side of a back three.

CB: Fabian Schar – 9/10 – Some excellent passes and runs throughout as he kept Son and co. quiet from start to finish. Even crowned an excellent display with a late goal.

CB: Dan Burn – 6/10 – Could have perhaps conceded a penalty before the break, but was otherwise solid for the Magpies. A threat in the opposition box, too.

RM: Jacob Murphy – 6/10 – A useful outlet down the right, albeit most of Newcastle’s opportunities came down the left. Did plenty of defensive work when required.

CM: Sean Longstaff -7 /10 – Complemented Guimaraes well in central areas with his industry.

CM: Bruno Guimaraes – 8/10 – Set up Newcastle’s third and bossed the midfield for the hosts. Ran the game from deep positions and was fierce in challenges.

LM: Elliot Anderson – 8/10 – A really encouraging display from the youngster, who was operating on the left-hand side of midfield. A lively presence in the final third with a good range of passing.

RW: Anthony Gordon – 8/10 – Terrorised the Spurs backline, setting up the opener and firing home Newcastle’s second. Tottenham couldn’t cope when he drifted into central areas.

ST: Alexander Isak – 9/10 – Tottenham’s backline simply couldn’t stop the lanky forward, who produced an excellent finish to put the hosts ahead. Sprinted clear to kill the game off after the break, finishing neatly once again.

LW: Harvey Barnes – 7/10 – Showed real glimpses of his quality with some neat touches and passes. Ultimately outshone by his attacking teammates, but still a strong showing.

Eddie Howe – 9/10 – A truly magnificent display from his side, especially given the injuries they have at present. His team played Tottenham off the park in an unfamiliar formation, with their intensity and ruthlessness putting the visitors to the sword.

GK: Guglielmo Vicario – 5/10 – Made the strange decision to not come and close Isak down for the third goal. Couldn’t handle corners and free kicks into his penalty area.

RB: Pedro Porro – 4/10 – A ridiculous back pass gifted Newcastle their second and he was exposed by the double act of Anderson and Barnes in the first half. Withdrawn with an injury shortly after the break.

CB: Cristian Romero – 3/10 – The Argentine is known for being rash and that was on full show at St James’ Park. Stepped up needlessly to allow Isak space for the game’s opener and was booked for a late tackle in the second half.

CB: Micky van de Ven – 2/10 – A nightmare first half for the Dutchman, who was floored twice by quick movement in the build-up to Newcastle’s goals. Didn’t get any better after the break as Isak raced clear of him for the hosts’ third. A day to forget.

LB: Destiny Udogie – 5/10 – Made one crucial intervention to prevent Newcastle grabbing a third before the break, but he struggled to cope with the electric Gordon when the ball was turned over.

CM: Yves Bissouma – 5/10 – Booked for a lunge early in the second half and had no control over the midfield battle whatsoever.

CM: Rodrigo Bentancur – 5/10 – Couldn’t act as playmaker in a deep-lying midfield role and was rarely involved before being hooked.

RM: Brennan Johnson – 6/10 – The Welshman’s threat was nullified by Newcastle’s back five when Spurs had possession. Barely had a sniff.

AM: James Maddison – 6/10 – Looked the most likely to make something happen of Tottenham’s forward unit, but his radar was a little off.

LM: Timo Werner – 4/10 – The attacker’s profligacy proved costly for Spurs in the first half and the German still lacks cutting edge in key moments.

ST: Son Heung-min – 5/10 – Surprisingly withdrawn before the hour mark but the skipper had been helpless in the first half, struggling to retain the ball or do anything productive in the centre-forward position.

Substitutes

SUB: Emerson Royal (49′ for Porro) – 5/10 – Couldn’t help bolster a dismal Spurs defence, who conceded two more after his arrival.

SUB: Pape Matar Sarr (57′ for Bentancur) – 5/10

SUB: Dejan Kulusevski (57′ for Son) – 6/10

SUB: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (57′ for Bissouma) – 5/10

SUB: Giovani Lo Celso (81′ for Maddison) – 6/10

Subs not used: Brandon Austin (GK), Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin, Bryan Gil.

Manager

Ange Postecoglou – 3/10 – His side were unrecognisable from some of their recent showings, outclassed by an injury-hit Newcastle side. He had no answer for the Magpies’ domination.

Player of the match: Alexander Isak (Newcastle)

Pep Guardiola hits back at critics of Erling Haaland after Real Madrid showing

Pep Guardiola has stepped forward to support Erling Haaland after the Manchester City striker’s recent form was hit with heavy criticism.

Following some below par performances against Liverpool, Arsenal, and Real Madrid, the likes of Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane have publicly questioned Haaland’s role in the team, with the latter claiming he plays more like a ‘League Two player’.

Guardiola defended Haaland last month and, after the striker’s showing in City’s 3-3 draw with Madrid brought further criticism, has once again moved to brush off concerns about the Norwegian’s impact on the team.

Asked how pleased he was with the player’s impact, Guardiola said: “A lot. He helps us to make more spaces in the areas and his contribution has been exceptional since the day he arrived last season.

“They [the pundits] do whatever they want. That is not a problem. They have an opinion, I have an opinion and it doesn’t matter if it is right or wrong. If I give an opinion it looks like I want to criticise the pundits but I don’t. We can agree or disagree.

“We are quite similar to last season – we scored four goals, four goals and three goals in the last three games, 11 goals in three games and Erling helped us score some of them by creating spaces for the others to score the goals.

“I saw in his face and in what he said after the game in the locker room [after Madrid] he was extremely happy.

“The target is not the Ballon d’Or, the target is to win trophies and he did. Would we have won five trophies last year without him? Not a chance.”

Guardiola’s comments come after Keane doubled down on his decision to compare Haaland to a League Two player.

“I don’t know what the big deal is, I give praise every week, I give praise, and I think he’s an amazing striker,” Keane said before adding: “But his general play is that of a League Two player. And I’m glad you are not agreeing with me, I don’t expect people to agree with me.

“His general play, week in, week out is nowhere near good enough. As a goalscorer and a striker, the best – and I said that. His link-up play, the way he lays the ball off, sometimes the options he gives his teammates or the options he doesn’t give them – as a striker and a goalscorer the best in the world, but his other play is that of a League Two player.”

Todd Boehly speaks out on Chelsea’s PSR fears after damning 2022/23 accounts released

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly remains confident the Blues will abide by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) after the club’s financial accounts for 2022/23 were released.

Following confirmation that Chelsea had paid £75.1m to agents between February 2023 and February 2024 – more than any other Premier League side – the Blues revealed a full analysis of their £90.1m losses for 2022/23.

Included in the report is the revelation that Chelsea’s losses would have been higher had it not been for the £76.5m sale of a club-owned hotel from the ownership group to BlueCo 22 Properties Limited, a subsidiary of parent company BlueCo 22 Limited.

With significant expenses not leading to the financial boost that comes with on-field success, Chelsea are reportedly at risk of a PSR breach which many believe will force them to sell close to £100m of players before June 30.

Nevertheless, in a statement signed by chairman Boehly, Chelsea once again rebuffed suggestions they were at risk of sanctions.

“The club continues to balance success on the field together with the financial imperatives of complying with UEFA and Premier League financial regulations,” the statement read. “The club has complied with these since their inception in 2012 and expects to do so in the foreseeable future.”

Chelsea ended last season with a wage bill of £404m, a figure only exceeded by Manchester City’s £423m.

That figure, which is also believed to include compensation fees to both Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, will likely have dropped following a summer of significant departures.

£203m was raised from player sales between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023, but a total of £745.2m was spent on new players.

Most of those transfer fees have been amortised, with Chelsea posting a league-high £205m in amortisation costs, and that figure is also believed to have risen after another busy summer of spending.

Mallorca vs Real Madrid: Preview, predictions and lineups

Real Madrid can take a step closer to the La Liga title when they visit Mallorca on Saturday evening.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side were pushed to their limits by reigning European champions Manchester City on Tuesday night, drawing the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final 3-3 at the Santiago Bernabeu ahead of the return leg next Wednesday.

While they may not want to exert themselves too much before their trip to the Etihad, Madrid have the chance to take another leap towards reclaiming the La Liga title if they can navigate a clash with 15th-placed Mallorca.

Here is 90min’s guide to Mallorca vs Real Madrid this weekend.

Mallorca suffered heartbreak in the Copa del Rey final last weekend, losing on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Athletic Club. They also lost several first-team players to injury, including left-back Toni Lato.

Dani Rodriguez and Jose Copete also picked up injuries and may miss Real Madrid’s visit as a result, with the La Liga strugglers eager to secure some unlikely points as they look to further distance themselves from the relegation zone.

Mallorca predicted lineup vs Real Madrid (5-3-2): Rajkovic; Gonzalez, Valjent, Raillo, Nastasic, J. Costa; Rodriguez, Samu, Darder; Muriqi, Larin.

David AlabaDavid Alaba

Real Madrid’s injury woes are starting to ease up at just the right moment, although they are still without two key starters. Thibaut Courtois recently suffered a setback in his recovery from an ACL tear and could be out for the season, while David Alaba is not expected to be fit for several months after also injuring his ACL.

Ancelotti may opt to rest some of his regulars against Mallorca at the weekend as he prepares for the return leg of the Champions League quarter-final, although he is still likely to field a strong XI.

Real Madrid predicted lineup vs Mallorca (4-3-1-2): Lunin; Vazquez, Militao, Nacho, Garcia; Modric, Tchouameni, Camavinga; Diaz; Joselu, Rodrygo.

The fact that Real Madrid are likely to rotate will offer struggling Mallorca a glimmer of hope, with Javier Aguirre’s side only suffering a narrow 1-0 loss in the reverse fixture in January. They will also be eager to bounce back after their Copa del Rey final disappointment.

However, regardless of how many changes Ancelotti makes, Madrid will still be strong favourites for this one and should be able to lean on the depth of their squad as they search for another victory at the top of the table.

Prediction: Mallorca 0-1 Real Madrid

Man City vs Luton: Preview, predictions and lineups

Manchester City face Luton Town in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon as they look to put pressure on their title rivals.

The reigning champions are currently third in an incredibly tight three-horse title race, but could capitalise on potential dropped points this weekend when Arsenal face Aston Villa and Liverpool host Crystal Palace.

The Cityzens were in action midweek and drew 3-3 in a thrilling Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid, with Pep Guardiola perhaps having one eye on the return fixture this coming Wednesday.

An injury-hit Luton will not be relishing a trip to the Etihad, a venue where no away team has won this season. The Hatters were hammered 6-2 in the FA Cup in the most recent meeting between the sides, conceding five to Erling Haaland.

Here is 90min’s preview of Man City vs Luton on Saturday.

Guardiola has a few absentees to contend with ahead of Luton’s visit but he should be able to welcome back Kevin De Bruyne, who missed the Champions League clash on Tuesday through sickness.

Phil Foden picked up a dead leg during the game against Madrid but is also in line to recover in time for Luton. However, both Kyle Walker and Nathan Ake should still miss out in the defence due to injuries.

Man City predicted lineup vs Luton Town (3-2-4-1): Ederson; Stones, Dias, Akanji; Lewis Rodri; Bobb, Foden, Alvarez, Doku; Haaland.

Elijah AdebayoElijah Adebayo

Luton’s already small squad has been decimated by injuries in recent weeks and Rob Edwards has a mountain of issues to contend with ahead of a trip to the Etihad.

A number of players are already out for the rest of the season, including Tom Lockyer, Marvelous Nakamba and Amari’i Bell, while the likes of Elijah Adebayo and Chiedozie Ogbene are also missing for the Hatters.

Gabriel Osho and Mads Andersen are both unavailable in defence, while Issa Kabore is ineligible to face his parent club. Arsenal loanee Albert Sambi Lokonga won’t be able to do the Gunners any favours this weekend as he’s currently on the sidelines with a thigh injury.

Luton Town predicted lineup vs Man City (5-2-2-1): Kaminski; Onyedinma, Hashioka, Mengi, Burke, Doughty; Clark, Barkley; Townsend, Chong; Morris.

Man City should have no major issues against a Luton side missing a number of players, crucially in the heart of their defence. There are few signs of an upset with Guardiola’s side having won both games this season, with the Hatters’ only hope being City rotation ahead of their Champions League second leg next week.

Regardless, Man City’s deep squad should waltz to victory on Saturday and it may even be a chance for them to bolster their goal difference.

Prediction: Man City 4-0 Luton Town
