United mulling Strootman move, seal Powell deal

Sir Alex Ferguson is weighing up a move for Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman this summer with a view of strengthening the club’s midfield.

Strootman has really impressed while playing for PSV Eindhoven in the last season, and the United boss believes that the defensive midfielder could be a real success at Old Trafford. United have had their midfield problems exposed after Paul Scholes decided to retire at the beginning of last season, with injuries to Darren Fletcher and Tom Cleverley only compounding the existing problem. With Fletcher still not having a definite return date to action, Ferguson is desperate to find someone who can fill in immediately.

The 22 year old is tailor made for the Premier league with his combative approach to the game as well as the ability to keep the game ticking. He is a typical box to box midfielder and can also sit there in front of the defense breaking down the opposition play very effectively. The player’s agent Chris Dekker recently refused to comment on Strootman’s future but explained that a decision will be taken once he returns from the Euros.  It is believed that PSV might be tempted to sell him after Dutch captain Mark Van Bommel has decided to join them for the next season.

Meanwhile, United have wrapped up the deal for Crewe young star Nick Powell for a fee believed to be in the region of £4m, and that figure can rise depending on the appearances the young striker makes in his first season at Old Trafford. Powell has been closely followed by Arsenal as well, but he has chosen to snub the Londoners for United. The player becomes the second signing for United this season after Shinji Kagawa joined the Reds from Dortmund earlier this week.
