Arsenal beat the likes of Belgian outfit Anderlecht along with newly promoted English side Southampton to lift the Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup, as they bring home their first piece of silverware in a long time, though a small one.
The Gunners came into this competition with a majority of their squad players and their youth squad. They beat Anderlecht 0-1, thanks to a Henri Lansbury header provided by young right-back Carl Jenkinson.
Arsenal ended the second game against Southampton at 1-1, after their new signing Jay Rodriguez put the Premier League new boys in the lead, shortly before Arsenal’s Ivorian attacker Gervinho made this level.
The match went into penalties, regardless of the fact that Arsenal were already crowned champions, a penalty shootout which they eventually lost 5-4 before lifting the Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup.
The Gunners bring this piece of silverware to their trophy cabinet at the Emirates Stadium, the fans hoping that this would be the first of many to follow.
