According to latest reports, Chelsea have decided to pull out from the race to sign Inter defender Maicon after La Liga champions Real Madrid declared their interest in the player.
Chelsea have been in the hunt for a right back for months now and are yet to finalize a deal involving any. With the departure of Jose Bosingwa, the Blues are in dire needs of a right sided defender to fill in for the coming season. The club has already added made reinforcements in their attacking department worth £65m over three players- Eden Hazard, Marko Marin and most recently, Oscar.
Chelsea were ready to put in a £9m bid for the 30 year old Brazilian but with Real Madrid renewing their interest in the player, it’s likely that Maicon would prefer a move to the Bernabeu instead of London. Roberto Di Matteo has acted quickly to find an alternative in Cesar Azpilicueta of Marseille.
The 22 year old has represented Spain at all levels but is yet to earn himself a senior cap. He is currently with Spain’s Olympics football team of which he has been appointed the captain. The Marseille full back is rumored to be valued at £7m and the officials at Stamford Bridge are trying to seal the deal at the earliest.
