Barcelona midfield marshal Sergio Busquets has welcomed the Catalan club’s idea to lure Arsenal star Alexander Song to Camp Nou this summer.
The Cameroon international established himself as one of the key players in the Gunners’ squad last season and has subsequently attracted attention from the Spanish heavyweights. Song has a couple of years remaining on his current contract and the strong tackling defensive midfielder wants a pay hike in the new deal.
Barcelona, who lost out the La Liga to arch rivals Real Madrid last term, are desperate to win it back and want to bring in reinforcements. After conceding defeat in signing Javi Martinez from Atheltic Bilbao, Tito Vilanova has now sought board approval for the purchase of the Arsenal star. Busquets was all praise for Song and was quoted as saying: ‘Song is a very good player – young, a hard worker, with lots of physical power.’
The Spain international, who was a regular for his country during their Euro quest, believes that he is ready to fight it out with Song for the midfield slot. The player is certain that after the departure of Seydou Keita, the club needs to bring in a good replacement to add to the squad depth.
‘Barca lose a lot without Keita, both on and off the pitch,’ he added. ‘He was a much-loved player who gave us a lot of physical power.
‘Another player in my position would be welcome, but either way I will keep working hard to win a place in the starting team.’
