Arsene Wenger says that Arsenal are still hoping to sign a midfielder and a defender before the transfer window closes next week.
Midfielder Alex Song is set to complete a move to Barcelona after the two clubs agreed terms on Saturday, while Jack Wilshere will be out until October as he recovers from yet another injury setback.
With defenders Laurent Koscielny and Bacary Sagna also sidelined, the Frenchman has admitted he will need to further strengthen his squad.
He told the club’s official website: “We are looking to bring one more midfielder in of course, and maybe one defender as well because we still feel we are short in some positions.”
The north London side got their Premier League campaign off to a disappointing start on Saturday as they failed to break down a resolute Sunderland defence and were held to a 0-0 draw at the Emirates.
Wenger said of the game: “We didn’t lose, but it is frustrating when you are home with everyone here and you do not create more chances than we did. It is very difficult to understand.”
Next up for the Gunners is a trip to the Britannia Stadium to take on Stoke, who drew 1-1 at newly-promoted Reading on the opening day.
