Scharner eager for Hamburg return after Wigan loan spell

The on-loan Latics defender is keen to return to this parent club because he feels he has unfinished business in the Bundesliga

Paul Scharner is determined to return to Hamburg at the end of the season despite enjoying a successful loan period at Wigan.

The Austrian has fared well back at the DW Stadium since joining from the Bundesliga side on loan in January but insists he wants to play his football at the Imtech Arena.

The 33-year-old joined Hamburg last summer after leaving West Brom but hasn’t been able to establish himself as a regular first-team player at the German outfit.

“There has been no real change. I am due to be back at Hamburg this summer,” he told the Hamburger Morgenpost.

“It’s my utmost ambition to make a name for myself at Hamburg. Those experiences I am having in the Premier League are giving me an extra boost to do so.

“I am actually believing in my full strength again. I am a good player, if I am getting regular match action!”

Scharner’s agent, Valentin Hobel, confirmed that the Austrian will return to Germany.

“Paul has a contract at Hamburg. It would take a statement from the club to see him change his mind. He would change his mind if the club tells him he has no future at Hamburg,” he said.
