Worns: Hummels would fit in at Barcelona

The Borussia Dortmund legend is in no doubt that the current Signal Iduna Park favourite would prove a big hit at Camp Nou

Christian Worns says Mats Hummels would have both the talent and the requisite maturity to succeed at Barcelona.

The Borussia Dortmund defender has been heavily linked with a move to Camp Nou at the end of the season, with recent reports suggesting that the Blaugrana are considering a €35 million bid for the 24-year-old Germany international.

Worns is reluctant to disclose whether he feels Hummels should push for a move to Catalunya but he is in no doubt that the player has what it takes to fit in at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“If clubs like Barca, Real, Manchester United or Bayern call, a player always starts to think,” the now-retired Dortmund legend told Goal. “That is totally understandable.

“He has proven his quality in every competition. When you have been at a club for a long time, you maybe think of taking a new challenge.

“The most important thing is to consider yourself ready for the task. I wouldn’t advise him on anything, as I am not his agent.

“Everybody has to take that decision [over whether to leave for another club] himself. But he is definitely at the right age.”

Hummels has come in form for some criticism of late, but Worns insists that there is no doubting the defender’s class.

“He has played very consistently for the last few years,” the 41-year-old argued. “It is normal to have more difficult periods after that. It is just the way things go.

“Other centre-backs have had weaker periods as well. But when a centre-back or a goalkeeper makes a mistake, this normally leads to a goal and it is therefore easier to point a finger at them.”

Dortmund are said to be considering signing Basel’s Fabian Schar as a replacement for Hummels, but Worns feels that Jurgen Klopp should instead go after Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker.

“All the other good centre-backs have long-term contracts,” he opined. “So, to replace Hummels, you’d have to buy someone in the category of Mertesacker.

“Mertesacker has turned in strong performances for the national team and Arsenal. He is a very good option for Germany’s back four, too.”
