Besiktas: We want to sign Ronaldinho

A director for the Turkish club has admitted talks are underway to bring the Brazilian ace to Istanbul, but the players wage demands are proving to be a stumbling block.

Besiktas officials have confirmed that an audacious plan is in place to try to lure Ronaldinho to the club.

The 33-year-old is currently out of contract and available on a free transfer after his current deal expired with Atletico Mineiro, and Besiktas have acted quickly in an attempt to secure the services of the soon-to-be sought after samba star.

Turkish media are reporting that high-ranking Besiktas personnel have met with Ronaldinho’s brother and agent Roberto Assis, although the club have yet to quantify this themselves.

However, Besiktas board member Ahmet Kavalci did tell reporters: “We want to sign Ronaldinho.”

Yet the player’s personal terms are preventing a deal being sealed, with Besiktas keen for sponsors to foot the bill for the former World Player of the Year’s salary.

“His wage is too high for us. We need a sponsor for him. We haven’t had an agreement with a sponsor yet and this is the only reason for not singing him,” Kavalci continued.

And Kavalci also suggested a deal was soon to be concluded for England international defender Joleon Lescott.

“We are negotiating with Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott. There will be some important development about this at Thursday.”
