'Gerrard will get new Liverpool contract offer' – Rodgers

The former England captain has suggested he could leave his boyhood club at the end of the season, but his manager is intent on keeping the 34-year-old midfielder at Anfield

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists Steven Gerrard will be offered a new contract by the club.

The Reds skipper revealed earlier this week that he would be prepared to leave Anfield if he is not offered an extension, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

But Rodgers quashed speculation over the former England captain’s future after Liverpool’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle on Saturday.

“It is quite straightforward,” the Northern Irishman told reporters. “I had a meeting with Steven’s representative about a week ago.

“I want him at the club and part of everything we are trying to do.

“I relayed that information to the ownership and I am sure they will go away with that and organise a deal with Steven’s representatives.”

Gerrard has been a mainstay for Liverpool this term, playing in every Premier League match this season and racking up over 480 Premier League appearances in total for the club.
