Cabinteely offer birthday cake to Yaya Toure to entice him to League of Ireland

The Dublin club have tried to tempt the Manchester City midfielder with cake and free entry to a league game

League of Ireland side Cabinteely have made an audacious offer to Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure to try to entice the Cote d’Ivoire international to join the Dublin club.

The 32-year-old could be set to leave the Etihad Stadium at the end of the 2014-15 Premier League season, with Dublin-based club Cabinteely hoping their public offer may tempt Toure to the SSE Airtricity First Division.

Toure caught the headlines last year when his agent alleged he was “upset” that City had failed to recognise his birthday in suitable fashion.

The former Barcelona man has been heavily linked with a transfer this summer, with Roberto Mancini having publicly confirmed his desire to be reunited with the player at Inter, while Paris Saint-Germain have also been rumoured suitors.

As the newest club in the League of Ireland, Cabinteely have been using social media to help market themselves, and offered all losing bettors free entry to a league game after Josh McKeown denied Finn Harps a 1-0 win with a 95th minute equaliser at the start of May.

Speaking on the League of Ireland GoalMouth podcast after the Finn Harps draw, Cabinteely chairman Pearse Toale expressed the importance of marketing in order to increase attendances.

“We had a board meeting and it was mentioned that there was a lot of Twitter anger after our late goal against Finn Harps,” Toal told Goal.

“Brian McGovern, who is on the board, said ‘should we do this?’ and we thought ‘yeah, we’ll give it a go’ and it went fairly viral after that!”

“I think it’s really important to get yourself out there through as many channels as is humanly possible.”
