The former Hammers defender is the odds-on favourite to take the reins at the Boleyn Ground this summer, as the owners search for an exciting new boss to lead them into a new era
After four years in which he led the club to promotion from the Championship at the first attempt before establishing them back in the Premier League, Sam Allardyce has left West Ham.
With the move to the Olympic Stadium coming up in a year’s time, owners David Gold and David Sullivan are said to be looking for an ambitious manager to take the Hammers into the new era while playing football in the ‘West Ham way’.
While star names such as Rafa Benitez 22/1 (23.00), Jurgen Klopp 33/1 (34.00) and Carlo Ancelotti 33/1 (34.00) have all been mentioned, Slaven Bilic is the current 4/7 (1.57) favourite to be handed the job.
The former Croatia boss is fondly remembered at Upton Park from his spell there as a player and – set to leave current club Besiktas when his contract expires at the end of the current season – seems like a good fit to return in a managerial capacity.
The owners are also said to be keen on convincing David Moyes to return to the Premier League from Spain, although the former Manchester United manager’s determination to remain at Real Sociedad makes him a 9/2 (5.50) outsider for the job.
Similarly, Unai Emery 9/2 (5.50) may be beyond the London club after leading Sevilla to the brink of a second consecutive Europa League title, his rising stock allegedly attracting the likes of Real Madrid and AC Milan recently.
On the other hand, Steve McClaren 12/1 (13.00) would surely jump at the chance to take the reins after being sacked by Derby County, but hardly fits the profile required by the ambitious West Ham ownership.
The same could be said for Harry Redknapp, who is on offer at 16/1 (17.00) to make a shock return to East London – the same price as former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo, who has left Schalke.
Instead, the Hammers will be aiming for the likes of Frank de Boer 20/1 (21.00), Marcelo Bielsa 25/1 (26.00), Michael Laudrup 25/1 (26.00) or Garry Monk 25/1 (26.00), and will undoubtedly be watching on with interest to see if Brendan Rodgers 25/1 (26.00) keeps his job at Liverpool this summer.
