The Italy international will spend the season away from Wearside after losing his place in the team and has been allowed to leave the Stadium of Light on a temporary deal
Sunderland winger Emanuele Giaccherini has been allowed to leave the club to join Serie A outfit Bologna on a season-long loan.
Manager Dick Advocaat has bolstered his attacking options in recent days with the arrival of Ola Toivonen on loan and fan favourite Fabio Borini on a four year deal, leaving Italy international forward Giaccherini on the fringes of the first-team.
Bologna are now set to benefit from the 30-year-old’s services as they bid to avoid relegation following their promotion back to the top flight.
Giaccherini has made 32 Premier League appearances for Sunderland since arriving from Juventus in 2013.
