Jack Byrne set for Man City return after disappointing Blackburn spell

The Irish midfielder has struggled to make an impact at Ewood Park, with Blackburn suffering at the wrong end of the Championship

Jack Byrne’s loan spell at Blackburn Rovers is set to be cut short, with the midfielder expected to make a return to Manchester City in January.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international joined Rovers on a season-long loan in July, but has endured a frustrating time at Ewood Park, making just seven appearances in all competitions.

And, Blackburn manager Owen Coyle has revealed that the 20-year-old is likely to return to the Premier League club with a view to playing more football, either in the youth team or with a new loan transfer.

“I have had dialogue with Manchester City over Jack Byrne who we know is a very talented player,” Coyle told the Lancashire Telegraph. “He will have a terrific career but I think it’s important Jack gets some game-time and he’s not had that of late.

“To be fair he has been ill over Christmas. The likelihood is that Jack will return to Manchester City and get some game-time, whether that be with another loan spell or in the youth teams.”

Byrne impressed in the Dutch Eredivisie last season, scoring four goals in 27 league appearances for Cambuur, including one against PSV Eindhoven.

Coyle’s Blackburn are currently languishing in the Championship relegation spots with just six wins in 25 games. However, they recently ended a six-game run without a win on January 2, beating promotion-chasing Newcastle United.
