Fundraising Begins to Help Non-League Tadcaster Albion Survive After Flood Devastation

Non-League Tadcaster Albion are facing the threat of going out of business after severe flooding in North Yorkshire left their Ings Lane ground completely submerged in water.

Storm Ciara and Dennis had made the River Wharfe peak in Tadcaster at 3.37m, leaving dirty river water completely covering the pitch while strong winds damaged the roof and the water penetrated the clubhouse, leaving the club in a perilous position.

Volunteers had worked tirelessly to paint and clean areas of the stadium in time for football returning in February, but the latest setback has left the club fearing this could be their last year of existence.

This is not the first time that weather, or indeed flooding, has affected the club, but after consultations at a director’s meeting, the fears are this now could be the last. The club estimated that to fix the damage it will need up to £42,000, with no contingency funds left.

Plans are being made to knock down their current clubhouse and replace it with a two-story building that would be out of the reach of potential flooding damages in the future.

Former England goalkeeper ?Peter Shilton offered his support to Tadcaster Albion in the wake of the news, revealing he will donate one of his limited edition gold gloves to be auctioned off in a bid to help them raise money.

Club chairman, Andy Charlesworth, said, via ?York Press: “We really, really appreciate all the support we have had from everyone. It’s like groundhog day. The flooding this time wasn’t quite as bad as after Storm Ciara, but worse than after Storm Dennis.

“We took all of the floor up in the clubhouse and lifted all of the furniture and bar stock. We are not sure if the cost of damages will increase, this will be assessed once the water goes down.”

A “JustGiving” page ?has been created in a bid to raise outside funds, and the club plan to get a grant from the Football Foundation to cover most of the cost. So far, 55% of their £12,000 target has been met, with donations coming in from far and wide to save Tadcaster Albion Football Club.
