German champions Bayern Munich welcome Austrian counterparts Red Bull Salzburg to the Allianz Arena as they go in search of tenth trip to the Champions League quarter-finals in their last 11 seasons.
The only team to succeed in preventing Bayern from reaching the last eight in that time were Liverpool, who knocked Die Roten out on their way to European glory in 2019.
Salzburg gave Bayern a mighty scare in the first leg, leading for much of the match and only succumbing to a stoppage-time equaliser from Kingsley Coman.
Here’s the lineup Julian Nagelsmann may select to get the job done on Tuesday…
Sven Ulreich (GK) – Manuel Neuer has returned to training following a meniscus injury, but Ulreich should keep his place while Germany’s number one ramps up his recovery.
Benjamin Pavard (RB) – The French World Cup-winner has quietly become a key figure at the back for Bayern, though that’s largely due to his only major competitor in the right-back slot being a vital midfielder.
Niklas Sule (CB) – Imposing centre-back Sule grabbed Bayern’s only goal in their weekend draw with Bayer Leverkusen.
Dayot Upamecano (CB) – Following Nagelsmann from RB Leipzig, the ex-Salzburg man has endured a testing debut season in Bavaria.
Lucas Hernandez (LB) – With Bayern well stocked in the heart of defence, the versatile Hernandez should get the nod over Englishman Omar Richards on the left.
Joshua Kimmich (CM) – There aren’t many midfielders better to watch nowadays than the incredible Kimmich.
Jamal Musiala (CM) – While naturally used to playing in the hole or out wide, Musiala has filled in a little deeper this season due to Bayern’s shortcomings in midfield.
Thomas Muller (AM) – Made his return from a Covid-related absence at the weekend but his main contribution was firing into his own net.
Serge Gnabry (RW) – Despite a quieter season than usual, Gnabry has remained as productive as ever, registering 12 goals and nine assists in 32 games for Bayern so far.
Robert Lewandowski (ST) – The Pole has gone two games without a goal or an assist, which is his worst drought this season. You have to imagine that he will be taking that personally à la Michael Jordan.
Kingsley Coman (LW) – Considering Bayern’s considerable riches out wide, it was hard to imagine Coman taking on more of a starring role this season, but he’s stepped up to the task (you know, whenever he has actually been fit).
