Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano calls out Mexican media after boos echo throughout Estadio Azteca

The Mexican national team held Jamaica to a 2-2 draw, narrowly topping the CONCACAF Nations League Group A standings to qualify for the final four round of the tournament as boos echoed throughout the hallowed Estadio Azteca.

El Tri returned to the famous Mexico City stadium for the first time since their disappointing 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign, prompting the 65,000 supporters attending to air out frustrations. Tension could be felt prior to kick off, but it was Jamaica’s seventh minute goal that prompted negative chants and targeted taunts.

Figures like Guillermo Ochoa, Jorge Sanchez and later Raul Jimenez were singled out by some of these boos. Anger swept the stands.

Following the match, Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano signaled the root of the problem before pleading for fans’ support.

“They have to support us, they have to be with us. No teammate wants to lose,” Lozano told TUDN. “The problem is that sometimes the media are the ones that affect that, the relationship between the fans and us.”

Lozano referenced the outlets, commentators and analysts that opt for negative takes on the Mexican national team to generate views and clicks. Though former head coach Gerardo Martino addressed the divide between the Mexican outlets and players ahead of the World Cup, Sunday’s showing at the Azteca proved a greater divorce.

New leader Diego Cocca insists, however, that the team can handle it.

“People have the right to say what they want and give their opinion on what they want; we’re strong, we’re committed and intending to work and continue on our path,” Cocca said during the postgame news conference.

“I’m happy with the unity of the group, with what was done on the field, with the number of goal-scoring situations that we created. I’m with them, I’m with the players.”

The Mexican national team will now have to earn back the support of the fans with positive returns in the upcoming CONCACAF tournaments and friendlies.

Mexico returns to action on April 19 when facing the United States in a friendly.
