Christian Eriksen sums up Man Utd’s biggest problem this season

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen insists things will improve for the faltering team but has admitted this season has often been a case of taking “one step forward and two steps back”.

United have lost nearly as many Premier League games as they have won 20 games into 2023/24, while defeats (14) actually outweigh victories (12) when it comes to all competitions.

Despite a strong November, Erik ten Hag’s team have badly struggled for consistency overall and find themselves seventh in the Premier League, as well as out of the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

In recent weeks, beating Chelsea, holding Liverpool to a draw and coming from behind against a very good Aston Villa team have all been immediately followed by disappointing results.

“This season in general has been one step forward and two steps back and it felt like that [against Nottingham Forest]. Our aim was to get three points so it’s definitely disappointing to come away with zero,” Eriksen told BBC Match of the Day.

“We tried our best but sometimes the luck and the better decisions in the final third, the better defending and the small details don’t happen,” he added, speaking specifically about the Forest game.

“We had our chances. They had a lot less but scored them. At the moment we don’t. We need a few chances to score goals and it makes things more difficult. Everyone is just trying to get goals to help the team. We are in the situation to score but at the moment it won’t go in.

“Things will heal and get better. There’s only one way forward and that’s to work hard. Sometimes it goes against us. As a footballer you want the best game every day but the only way to do that is to work.”
