Liverpool vs Tottenham: Preview, predictions and lineups

Liverpool play host to Tottenham in the Premier League this Sunday as both sides aim to bring poor runs of form to an end.

The Reds have surrendered any hope of lifting the Premier League title in recent weeks as Jurgen Klopp’s final season in charge peters out, but the pressure will have now lifted for the Carabao Cup winners. Liverpool looked sharper in their 2-2 draw with West Ham United last time out, but their recent displays have left a lot to be desired in both boxes.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are on their own subpar streak, losing their last three Premier League games. Their most recent was a disheartening 2-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea, adding to a 3-2 loss to north London rivals Arsenal and a 4-0 humiliation against Newcastle United. Their dreams of Champions League qualification are fading fast.

Matches between these two sides are often guaranteed drama and that was certainly the case in the reverse fixture. Spurs beat nine-man Liverpool 2-1 with a 96th-minute Joel Matip own goal after VAR had wrongly ruled out Luis Diaz’s effort earlier in the game.

Here is 90min’s guide to Sunday’s match-up.

Liverpool still have a few fitness issues heading into the final three matches of the campaign, including long-term absentees Thiago and Joel Matip. They are both out for the season and have likely played their final games for the club given they are out of contract this summer.

Diogo Jota is a big miss up top having scored the dramatic winner in Liverpool’s 4-3 victory in this fixture last season, although he did see red in the match earlier this term. Skipper Virgil van Dijk is also a major doubt having not trained this week, but could still feature.

The good news for the Reds is that young Conor Bradley is available to Klopp once again having been sidelined since the defeat to Crystal Palace in mid-April.

Liverpool predicted lineup (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Endo, Gravenberch; Salah, Gakpo, Diaz.

Tottenham now have six players who will miss the rest of the season after Timo Werner suffered a hamstring injury against Arsenal. With the German only on loan at Spurs, he may have played his final game for the club.

Ben Davies was also injured in the north London derby and is out for the campaign, with his fellow left-back Destiny Udogie also sidelined. Ryan Sessegnon, Manor Solomon and Fraser Forster are in the treatment room as well.

Tottenham predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Emerson; Bentancur, Bissouma, Maddison; Johnson, Richarlison, Son.

Tottenham will need to go all out in this one if they are to have any hope of leapfrogging Aston Villa in fourth, although that looks extremely unlikely at present. With Liverpool also playing with no fear at Anfield and wanting to offer Klopp the best send-off possible, this could be a crazy clash.

Both sides prioritise attacking play and neither has kept a league clean sheet since early March, with this fixture rarely failing to live up to expectation. Expect goals on Sunday… and then some more.

Prediction: Liverpool 3-3 Tottenham
