Mohamed Diame Reveals Doubts Over Future at Newcastle United Amid Contract Dispute

Newcastle United midfielder Mohamed Diame has spoken about the uncertainty over his future at St James’ Park.

The 31-year-old has revealed that the club are unwilling to extend his contract for the two years he desires, due to the Magpies’ policy with players over the age of 30.

Mohamed Diame

Diame told ?Chronicle Live: “The situation is still the same: I need two more starts to get one extra year.

“But, I spoke with the club, and when we were talking about my contract, I asked for two years, and they don’t want that.

“Because we know what they want for this club; it’s difficult to get an extension when you are over 30 here.”

N'Golo Kante,Mo Diame

Diame joined ?Newcastle in 2016 from ?Hull City, helping them make an immediate return to the Premier League from the Championship. The Senegalese international is now in the final year of his contract and would like to remain on Tyneside should the offer come his way, but Diame is prepared for life away from Rafael Benitez’s team.

“It’s not a problem for me; it’s football and part of the job,” Diame continued.

“If I get the opportunity to stay, I will stay. And, if not, I will go somewhere else and enjoy my football.”

Despite being a regular in the Newcastle midfield, making 23 starts this season, this doesn’t seem to have much bearing on the ongoing contract dispute, with the former ?West Ham United man admitting he has no idea if it will be resolved.

Mo Diame

“I don’t know at all! I’m trying to enjoy it as much as I can because it’s amazing playing here with all the fans, and more when we’ve got an atmosphere like this and we are winning games,” he added.

“I will be fine, of course. As I’ve said, being a player who played for ten years in this country – it opens you a lot of doors. I will be fine.”

Diame has 238 Premier League appearances under his belt and he would be an experienced asset for any potential suitors in the summer transfer window.

Mohamed Salah: Why Liverpool’s Star Will Never Be Considered a Premier League Great

?Mohamed Salah was influential in ?Liverpool’s 2-0 win over ?Cardiff City on Sunday, winning the penalty which secured all three points for the Reds to send them back to the top of the Premier League.

Cardiff captain Sean Morrison was judged to have fouled Salah, with the Bluebirds’ defender’s arms encasing the Egyptian winger. The incident certainly gave referee Martin Atkinson a decision to make, but Salah’s collapse to the floor left a sour taste. To quote Cardiff boss Neil Warnock: “It was like a great 9.9 dive, weren’t it?”

Mohamed Salah

One year ago today, ?Salah was awarded the Men’s PFA Player of the Year award. This season, he could conceivably go on to win the ?Premier League, Champions League as well as a Golden Boot, but Sunday’s theatrics were another reminder that there’s still something off about the Reds’ winger.

It is quite remarkable what the 26-year-old has achieved since arriving at Anfield last summer. In his debut season, Salah scored 46 goals in 52 games across all competitions, as he led the Reds to the Champions League final and a top four finish.

As a ?Chelsea fan, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. His wonder goal during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over the Blues last weekend rubbed some serious salt in the wound.

During his spell at Stamford Bridge, that same left foot struck the ball from an almost identical angle, but instead of flying into the top corner, the wild shot earned Shrewsbury Town a throw-in almost in line with where Salah was stood.

His time in a Chelsea shirt will live long in memory for all the wrong reasons. Roman Abramovich has brought some questionable footballers to west London over the last 16 years, but in my lifetime I can’t say I’ve seen many players look so out of place in the Premier League. He looked like a supporter who’d won a raffle to join the first team squad.

In short, Salah was fortunate to have Juan Cuadrado at the club at the same time.

‘We had to let him go, he was rubbish. He was rubbish!’ – David Brent

There’s no logical explanation for the transformation that followed upon his return to England.

It should be impossible to belittle the achievements of a player who has scored more goals (32) in a single Premier League season than ?Luis Suarez and ?Cristiano Ronaldo at the peak of their powers, but the truth is, Mohamed Salah is not a Premier League great.

That record-breaking season has etched Salah into the history books, but in ten years, will we reminisce about this era of Premier League football and marvel at Salah’s abilities? I think not.

Take his ‘solo wonder goal’ against ?Southampton earlier this month. Salah picked up the ball midway in his own half and ran in a straight line, beating no defenders, and swung an awkward left leg at the ball. It hit the back of the net and that’s what counts, but a more natural striker of the ball can be found at your local Power League.

As prolific as he may be, watching Salah with the ball at his feet is reminiscent of a dog with a £1 beach ball on his first trip to the beach. But that’s his trump card. How does a full-back predict which way a winger will go when the winger himself has no idea which way the ball will bounce off his foot?

When we talk about forward players who have lit up the Premier League, we talk about Ryan Giggs, Thierry Henry, Ronaldo, ?Eden Hazard. These are players who make the game look easy, who make defenders wish they stayed at home and are capable of raising a whole stadium to its feet.

Eden Hazard,Ondrej Kudela

As for Salah, it’s more a case of standing up in anticipation of helping your child off the deck after they take their first steps.

Of course, if you’re a Liverpool supporter – do you care? He’s the league’s joint-top scorer and silverware looks to be on the horizon under Jurgen Klopp. The stats don’t lie either – Salah’s record at Liverpool is astonishing and he’s silenced the ‘One Season Wonder’ agenda with a further 23 goals in 47 games this campaign.

However, only ?Wilfried Zaha has lost possession on more occasions than Salah this season (110). Only three players have missed more big chances (15).

FBL-ENG-PR-CARDIFF-LIVERPOOL

But what about last season? He was flawless.

Was he?

Salah tops last season’s charts for big chances missed (23), while losing possession 95 times – the fourth-most in the division. As I said, the stats don’t lie.

Salah may be a great goalscorer, but should he mentioned in the same breath as the footballing greats that have graced the Premier League over the years? I’m not so sure.

?Luke Shaw could return for the home side after serving a two-match suspension that saw him miss the ?clash with Everton on Sunday.

For City, ?Kevin De Bruyne is likely to miss Wednesday’s affair after hobbling off during their 1-0 victory over ?Tottenham on the weekend.

?David Silva, ?Vincent Kompany and ?Benjamin Mendy could all be pushing for starting shirts, the latter missed out on Saturday’s game due to poor match fitness after recovering from a long-term injury.

Predicted Lineups

?Manchester City ?Ederson; Walker, Laporte, Stones, Zinchenko; Fernandinho, Gundogan, Foden; B. Silva, Aguero, Sterling

Head to Head Record

?

In the reverse fixture in November, ?Guardiola’s side won 3-1 and will be looking to put in a similar performance come Wednesday.

Although this is the 44th Premier League derby, it will mark the 178th competitive meeting between the two clubs. The Red Devils have won on 73 of these occasions, with Manchester City only coming out victorious 52 times.

???Sergio Aguero will be looking to add to his impressive goal tally against the Red Devils which has seen him score 11 times against Wednesday’s hosts. Not only is the Argentinian the highest Manchester derby goal scorer ever, but he has bagged himself 19 in the league this season as well.

The visitors will not be intimated by the record however, with the Sky Blues having won this fixture in their previous two visits.

Recent Form

?

Solskjaer’s team put in a dismal performance against ?Everton on Sunday and look to be struggling for passion and confidence as of late. If the opportunity to dismantle City’s title hopes isn’t enough to inspire better form, the Norwegian manager may have bigger problems on his hands.

??Despite ?crashing out of the ?Champions League to Spurs last week, Guardiola’s side brushed off the criticism and bounced back against Tottenham in the league this weekend. Although they only just got the win, their recent ability to snatch positive results shows exactly why they have what it takes to go all the way this season.

Having only won two of their last five league games, they face a strong City side that haven’t tasted top-flight defeat since ?Newcastle beat them 2-1 in January.

FBL-ENG-PR-NEWCASTLE-MAN CITY

Here’s a look at how both sides have fared in their last five matches in all competitions:

?Manchester United Manchester City?
?Everton 4-0 Man Utd (21/04) ?Man City 1-0 Tottenham (20/04)
?Barcelona 3-0 Man Utd (16/04) ?Man City 4-3 Tottenham (17/04)
?Man Utd 2-1 West Ham (13/04) ?Crystal Palace 1-3  Man City (14/04)
?Man Utd 0-1 Barcelona (10/04) ?Tottenham 1-0 Man City (9/04)
Wolves 2-1 Man Utd (2/04) ?Man City 1-0 Brighton

Prediction

Liverpool fans will be hoping United can put their poor form aside and upset City’s title hopes, with the Red Devils certainly possessing the quality to cause an upset.

Although the pressure is on the visitors to get a result, it’s nothing they haven’t dealt with before and so will certainly be confident ahead of Wednesday night. Guardiola has faith in his team and that has been reflected in the quality of their recent performances.

Despite City’s excellent form as of late, if Solskjaer’s side can keep some possession they may be capable of causing an upset.

Prediction: Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City

Maurizio Sarri Set to Rest Olivier Giroud for Chelsea’s Clash With Burnley Despite Impressive Form

?Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has hinted that Olivier Giroud will return to the bench for Monday’s meeting with Burnley, despite his impressive form in the Europa League.

Both Alvaro Morata and Gonzalo Higuain have struggled in front of goal during their respective times at Stamford Bridge, but Sarri has continued to leave Giroud out in the Premier League, even though he is the Europa League’s top scorer this season.

FBL-ENG-PR-CARDIFF-CHELSEA

?Speaking ahead of the game, Sarri insisted that ?Giroud has played more than his fair share of games this season, and continues to be dropped for fitness reasons.

He said: “Giroud played the match number 39 [in Thursday’s win over Slavia Prague]. Thirty-nine! Not number nine… 39! 39!

Starting games? With 19 or 20 I don’t remember. He is playing because he is very useful for us, like in 70 minutes against Slavia. Very, very useful.

“He played really very well but he needs to recover more than the other players because he is 90kg and so after the match he needs time to recover, only for this.”

In the Premier League this season, Giroud has made just seven starts, as Sarri has preferred Alvaro Morata, Higuain and even Eden Hazard in a central role. He has been forced to settle for minutes in the Europa League, in which Giroud sits atop the scoring charts with ten goals from 11 outings.

By contrast, Morata managed just nine goals in 24 appearances before his January loan move to ?Atletico Madrid, and Higuain has found the back of the net three times in 13 matches, all of which came against opposition who have since been relegated from the league.

Olivier Giroud

Giroud recently suggested that ?he may be forced to leave the club over concerns about his game time, saying: “I’m not satisfied with being second choice. The important thing for me is to have more minutes. I’m a competitor, so obviously I want to play more.”

He is out of contract this summer, but the Blues have the option to extend his deal by a further year. Sarri ?confirmed that club officials intend to do so, which would keep Giroud at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2020.

How Shkodran Mustafi May Have Cemented His Legacy as Arsenal’s Worst Ever Defender

?Oh Shkodran. Just where to begin? Just when you thought the German couldn’t fall any further in the eyes of Arsenal fans, the centre-back proceeded to tell everyone to hold his drink and watch him do worse.

It may have been a poor team performance from the Gunners, but in clawing themselves back to 1-1 straight after half-time against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon, you sensed the tides had turned. The Emirates was rocking, the players smelled blood, and the three points that they so desperately needed were in sight once again.

Wilfried Zaha,Shkodran Mustafi

But in ushering Wilfried Zaha through to score for a nice Easter Sunday gift, Mustafi may have single-handedly cost ?Arsenal? Champions League football next year in the blink of an eye. With the Red Devils getting humiliated at Everton, here was the opportunity for Unai Emery’s side to pull away from Manchester United in the race for the top four.

Instead, the defeat now means everything looks as close as its ever been, and in truth, with three away fixtures still to come, the Gunners are no longer favourites to secure Champions League football next season.

After the game, Emery was understandably protective of his player. Pressed on Mustafi’s performances this season, the Spaniard leapt to the German’s defence and hailed him as being ‘consistent’. The ex-PSG boss was undoubtedly keen to deflect criticism away from the centre-back, but you just wonder whether a Jose Mourinho-style public rollicking might have been the wake-up call needed instead.

In the modern era, the Gunners have had some of the best ?Premier League defenders in the game; the likes of Tony Adams, Sol Campbell, Kolo Toure, Laurent Koscielny et al. But they’ve had their fair share of the bad too. Igor Stepanovs anyone? Indeed, it was so typically ‘Mustafi’ that a week after producing arguably his best performance in an Arsenal shirt in a hard-fought 1-0 win at Watford, he proceeded to throw it all away with a piece of mindless defending.

What frustrates and infuriates in equal measure about the World Cup winner (yes, that’s right), is the 27-year-old’s tendency to repeat the same mistakes. Einstein’s definition of insanity was trying the same thing and expecting different results, and in the former Valencia man’s case, it’s throwing himself into tackles when there’s absolutely no need for it. It’s reckless at best, and sheer stupidity at worst.

There have been countless moments since his arrival from the Mestalla where just basic communication and understanding of his fellow defenders and goalkeeper would have helped him no end. The Zaha calamity on Sunday was eerily similar to his mistake in Southampton’s opening goal at the Emirates last season, when he appeared to just let Charlie Austin ghost in in front of him and steer the ball past Petr Cech at the near post.

The likes of Stepanovs, Pascal Cygan and Phillipe Senderos all had their moments, but their defensive troubles were somewhat covered up by the rest of the team. In Mustafi’s case, any mistake gets amplified, with the Gunners simply not of the requisite quality to make up for it.

A propensity to volley criticism at his teammates, as he did so at Bernd Leno’s expense at the weekend, makes it even more impossible for fans to forgive him; in a time when Emery needs his players to embrace the responsibility, Mustafi shirks it.

Injuries and suspensions have no doubt taken its toll on Emery’s selection plans, but it won’t be a day too soon if Shkodran Mustafi never puts on an Arsenal shirt again. Extreme measures perhaps, but put simply, Gunners fans at this point would rather have a Didier Drogba-scarred Senderos at centre-back ahead of the bundling German. And that just sums it all up.

Let’
