Why the USWNT Will Retain the Women’s World Cup Title

The United States will become the latest nation to attempt the difficult task of repeating as World Champions, when the 2019 World Cup begins in France on 7 June and they have a great chance to make history.

Becoming a world champion is one of the hardest feats in all of sport, but an even greater challenge is building on previous success. Only one nation has ever won back-to-back titles in the Women’s World Cup (Germany 2003/2007), speaking volumes about how hard it is to sustain the title of best in the world over the course of time.

Although the USWNT still has many questions surrounding them, the combination of attacking star power and defensive tenacity cannot be matched by any other squad in the tournament.

Something that every nation around the world can take from the USWNT is the seamless transition from veteran players to up-and-coming stars. Too many times before big tournaments, the struggle between old and young has gotten in the way of a team reaching its full potential. This United States squad does not have this problem and in the end, this will be the Lady Yanks’ most valuable asset going into this year’s World Cup.

The USWNT is full of star players, Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd and Megan Rapinoe just to name a few, but they will all be playing different roles compared to previous competitions.

Morgan, for example, spent the majority of her early career playing with American legend Abby Wambach and was always in the shadow of her country’s all-time leading goalscorer despite scoring 101 times on the international level. The 2019 World Cup will be a chance for the 29-year-old to cement herself as the star of the United States for the first time, but this responsibility comes with a lot of new pressure.

Alex Morgan

On the other end of the spectrum, Lloyd is past her prime and has had to transition from her natural central-midfield role to a spot up top. Lloyd was the MVP of the previous World Cup in Canada but her role will be completely different four years later. Despite her determination to be the centre-piece of the squad, Lloyd recognises it’s her time to step aside and let the younger players take the team to glory.

This process was highlighted by the ceremony held at half-time of the United States’ previous match against Belgium, in which the 1999 World Cup winners were celebrated 20 years after their triumph. The squad of ’99 brought in one of the greatest values in sports: do whatever it takes to win, and this mindset has trickled all the way down to the current crop preparing for the competition in 2019.

Rarely does a transition of power go so seamlessly, but the USWNT seems to have the process down to a science.

Further assets for the United States are the personalities of the players involved. The Lady Yanks could easily go into every match with the mindset of being the best, but the veterans in the squad would never let that happen.

Women such as Julie Ertz and Lindsey Horan bring a type of intensity to the pitch that is hardly matched by anyone in world soccer, men or women. The leadership in the team is head-and-shoulders above every other country in the tournament and this drive will push the United States through tough matches that come down to the wire.

This intensity flows through the blood of every American player and is another direct effect from teams of the past. The USWNT has fielded countless players who wore their emotions on their badge and the passion radiates throughout the squad for generations.

While team camaraderie and hard work ethic is a good starting point for any team, in a tournament as big as the World Cup a team’s overall skill level plays the biggest part. This is where the United States really distance themselves from the rest of the pack.

FBL-WOMEN-FRIENDLY-FRANCE-USA

From top to bottom, the USWNT has the best players in the world. The combination of skill, speed and strength the Lady Yanks possess can’t be matched by any other nation for a full 90 minutes, let alone an entire tournament.

Morgan seems to be scoring goals whenever she feels like it and 23-year-old Rose Lavelle is growing into one of the most creative players on the planet. We also can’t forget the number one overall pick in last year’s draft, Tierna Davidson, who may be the best one-on-one defender the US has had in its ranks since Brandi Chastain.

Outside-back has been a point of conversation leading up to the World Cup in the summer, but it seems like manager Jill Ellis has found her solution. Crystal Dunn has adapted well to a position on the left side of a back-four despite playing most of her career as a winger. On the opposite side, Kelley O’Hara is one of the best at her position and if she can stay healthy the US won’t have a problem.

Megan Rapinoe,Hina Sugita

The quality at every position gives the United States a huge advantage over other countries around the world as they do not have a clear weak point in the squad. With the team’s overall skill and traditional intensity, the USWNT seems poised to take home back-to-back World Cup trophies for just the second time in history.

Liverpool Set Highest Premier League Points Tally With 2-0 Win Over Cardiff on Sunday

?Liverpool continued their pursuit of a first Premier League title as they battled to a deserved 2-0 win over Cardiff on Sunday.

The Reds were frequently frustrated by a stubborn Cardiff defence, but a strike from Georginio Wijnaldum and a late penalty from James Milner secured a sixth consecutive Premier League victory and sent Jurgen Klopp’s side back to the top of the table ahead of Manchester City.

Georginio Wijnaldum

The league still remains in ?Manchester City’s hands, but Pep Guardiola’s side play their game in hand on Wednesday when they travel to Old Trafford to face off against ?Manchester United in a season-defining derby.

Should City drop any points in that one, then ?Liverpool will be in the driving seat for the final three league games against Huddersfield, Newcastle and Wolves.

There will be plenty of twists yet to come, but Liverpool can take pride in the fact that they have played their part in one of the most exciting Premier League title races in recent history and, as this stat from ?Opta reveals, they couldn’t have done much more this season.

Liverpool have now amassed 88 points in the league this season, their best ever total in a Premier League season; adjusting to three points for a win, they have only earned more in a top-flight campaign in 1978-79 (98) and 1987-88 (90)

Of course, as impressive a statistic as that is, it will ultimately mean very little if Liverpool are unable to overtake City in the league.

After the Citizens face off against United, they are set to come up against Burnley, Leicester and Brighton – three games they would be expected to take maximum points from.

Liverpool don’t just have the league to play for, however. The Reds will face off against ?Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Champions League at the start of May and will be hopeful of avenging their defeat in the final of the competition against Real Madrid last year.

Carlo Ancelotti Insists Arsenal Do Not Play ‘Fantastic Football’ After Europa League Defeat

Despite conceding that Arsenal were deserved winners of their Europa League quarter-final tie against Napoli, Carlo Ancelotti has stated that the Gunners do not play ‘fantastic football’.

The clash on Thursday night saw a battle between two of the most successful managers in European cup history, when Ancelotti and Unai Emery went head to head at the San Paolo Stadium.

Lorenzo Insigne

Across a distinguished career that has seen him manage some of the biggest clubs Europe has to offer, Ancelotti has tasted Champions League glory three times – twice with Milan and once with Real Madrid – making him the most successful manager in the competition’s history alongside Zinedine Zidane and Bob Paisley.

Whilst Emery cannot list any Champions League trophies on his resume, he himself is a record holder in the Europa League, having won the tournament three times in a row with Sevilla, between 2014 and 2016.

However, despite Ancelotti’s managerial pedigree, Emery came out on top after following up a dominant 2-0 win at the Emirates with a hard fought 1-0 victory on Thursday night. The only goal of the night came courtesy of an Alexandre Lacazette free kick, as Arsenal held on for an away clean sheet for only the sixth time this season.

Speaking in the aftermath of Napoli’s elimination from the tournament, Football.Lon?don have quoted Ancelotti’s opinions on where it went wrong for his side.

“I think the key to qualification was the first 20 minutes in the away match, that’s when we played really badly,” he said.

“The two games were really balanced, there wasn’t that much of a difference as the result suggests.”

Carlo Ancelotti

With a claim that’s sure to rankle a few fans of a club who have historically been renowned for their free-flowing, attacking football; Ancelotti went on to commend the gunners on their organisational skills, before having a subtle dig at their style of play.

“I think Arsenal is an intelligent team, they are really well organised offensively and defensively. It’s not a team that plays in my opinion fantastic football, but they play intelligently and they deserved victory.”

With Juventus having already wrapped up their 35th Serie A title, and Napoli having been eliminated from the Coppa Italia, Ancelotti’s men will be aiming to finish the season strongly by securing second place in the league.

Unai Emery Says Arsenal Youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles Must Keep Improving

?Unai Emery has admitted that he’s pleased with the progress made by Ainsley Maitland-Niles, but has warned the young fullback against resting on his laurels.

A product of Arsenal’s famed Hale End Academy, Maitland-Niles made his debut as a 17-year-old back in 2014, but did not begin appearing regularly for the Gunners until last year’s campaign under Arsene Wenger.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles,Allan

Despite playing the bulk of his age-grade football at his preferred position of centre midfield, Emery has deployed Maitland-Niles at right back for the majority of the season. Whilst it may not be his chosen role, the youngster has showcased a clear aptitude for the position, with aggressive pressing, raw pace, and seemingly endless reserves of energy becoming hallmarks of his performances.

These traits were all on show during Arsenal’s midweek Europa League quarter-final clash against Napoli, where he helped guide his team to a 1-0 victory, as they progressed to a tantalising semi-final bout against Emery’s former side, Valencia.

Speaking to the Daily Star after Thursday’s win, Emery discussed the progress made by Maitland-Niles this season, and outlined what he expects from any young player attempting to break into the Arsenal first team.

“First you have to know that our level is a very big level and it requires young players to do a lot of work to show us they have the possibility to get in – and then hold one position at Arsenal.

“This process was done by Ainsley and it is continuing. But I demand from him not to stop – to do even more.”

Unai Emery

?Despite progressing to the semi-final of the Europa League in impressive fashion, Emery was quick to turn his attention back to Sunday’s Premier League bout against a Crystal Palace side whose league position contradicts their threat.

“Palace have a big coach with big experience. They have big players who are in form. Respect to them.

“And I think they have had some very good performances away from home. For example, they won at Manchester City. That means further respect to them.

Wilfried Zaha

Chief amongst these “big players” outlined by Emery, is surely Wilfred Zaha. Palace’s talismanic striker will arrive at The Emirates with perhaps more of a point to prove than usual, after recent links with a move to Arsenal’s north London rivals, as well as PSG.

Alaves vs Barcelona Preview: Where to Watch, Live Stream, Kick Off Time & Team News

?Barcelona travel to Alaves for their La Liga clash this Tuesday night as they continue to surge towards a second successive title.

The Catalans were bland during their 2-1 victory against Real Sociedad over the weekend, collecting a fortuitous three points courtesy of Clement Lenglet’s towering header and a sharp drive from left-back Jordi Alba. The result maintains their nine point advantage at the top of the table, with closest challengers Atletico Madrid having also won on Saturday.

Clement Lenglet

The hosts drew 2-2 against Valladolid and currently lie in eighth place, with the side still vying for qualification for next year’s Europa League. They were genuine contenders for a top four finish less than a month ago, before a poor run of form ended any such aspirations.

Check out 90min’s preview of the encounter below.

?What Time is Kick Off? ?20:30 (BST)

Team News

?

Wingers Takashi Inui and Burgui are unavailable for Alaves, with the latter not expected back until next season after rupturing his cruciate knee ligament in March. The Japanese international, meanwhile, has a sprained ankle.

The Basque side are also without centre-back Guillermo Maripán who has a similar issue to Inui, both men set to return within the fortnight.

Rafael Alcantara alias Rafinha

Ernesto Valverde is without just one of his first-team squad members, midfielder Rafinha having been missing since November. He is nearing full fitness after the serious knee injury he sustained over the winter, but Tuesday’s clash comes too soon for the Brazilian.

Neither Alaves nor ?Barça have any players suspended for the ?La Liga match-up after ?Gerard Pique and ?Luis Suarez returned for the champions against Sociedad.

Predicted Lineups

?Alaves ?Pacheco; Aguirregabiria, Ely, Laguardia, Marin; Twumasi, Garcia, Pina, Jony; Calleri, Guidetti.
?Barcelona Ter Stegen; Semedo, Pique, Lenglet, Alba; Busquets, Vidal, Arthur; Messi, Coutinho, Suarez.?

Head to Head Record

?

?Lionel Messi put on a masterclass in the reverse fixture back in August, hitting a double as Barcelona ran out 3-0 winners. The Argentine sent out an early warning when he crashed a first-half free-kick off of the crossbar before scoring with his next dead-ball attempt, a low effort sneaking past Fernando Pacheco to break the deadlock just after the hour.

Alaves were fortunate once more when Messi whipped a sumptuous curling shot off of the outside of the post minutes later, but they soon crumbled. Philippe Coutinho hammered a rasping drive home in the closing stages before the five-time Ballon d’Or winner brought the Camp Nou to its feet with a tidy near-post finish.

That success took Barça to double figures in total wins over Tuesday’s opponents, with the league leaders having lost just once to Alaves in their history. The latter have never won a home fixture against La Blaugrana, their sole victory coming at the Camp Nou in late 2016. A single draw – a goalless affair back in 2005 – completes the all-time record.

Recent Form

?

Abelardo Fernández’s recruits are winless in the past month, their last triumph coming in a 3-1 victory away to Huesca. Since then they have lost three and drawn two of their La Liga fixtures, scoring four goals and conceding 11.

By contrast, Barcelona have not lost since late January, Sevilla securing a 2-0 lead in the first leg of their Copa del Rey tie. Valverde’s men hit them for six in the return fixture to ease into the next round, no side having overcome them since. They are firmly on course for the treble after dismissing ?Manchester United 4-0 on aggregate in their ?Champions League quarter-final tie and easing past ?Real Madrid in the cup semis.

FBL-LIGA-ESP-REAL MADRID-BARCELONA

The 2-1 win over Sociedad followed up a drab 0-0 away to Huesca the previous weekend, though crucially the Catalans beat rivals ?Atletico Madrid 2-0 in their top of the table clash two weeks ago.

Here’s how the two teams got on in their last five fixtures:

?Alaves Barcelona?
?Alaves 2-2 Valladolid (19/4) ?Barcelona 2-1 Real Sociedad (20/4)
?Espanyol 2-1 Alaves (13/4) ?Barcelona 3-0 Manchester United (16/4)
?Alaves 1-1 Leganes (07/4) ?Huesca 0-0 Barcelona (13/4)
?Sevilla 2-0 Alaves (04/4) ?Manchester United 0-1 Barcelona (10/4)
?Alaves 0-4 Atletico Madrid (30/3) ?Barcelona 2-0 Atletico Madrid (06/4)

Prediction

?

The midweek meeting with the Red Devils appeared to have taken its toll on Barça as they stumbled to a win over Sociedad in the following game. The usually reliable Suarez was noticeably off of the pace, whilst Messi lacked his usual killer edge.

If they repeat that sub-par performance against Alaves they may well drop points in the title race, though they have a healthy cushion that would allow them to do so without any major repercussions.

Nevertheless, Valverde will be eager to get the top spot in La Liga secured as early as possible so the side’s focus can switch to matters in Europe and the Copa del Rey. With that being the case, he will demand significant improvement from Saturday’s outing, with Alaves likely to suffer as a consequence.

Prediction: Alaves 0-2 Barcelona
