Paris Saint-Germain Crowned Ligue 1 Champions Following Lille’s Draw Against Toulouse

?Paris Saint-Germain have been crowned Ligue 1 champions for the eighth time after Lille slipped to a goalless draw against Toulouse on Sunday.

The reigning champions now have 81 points after 32 games and cannot be caught as they lead Lille – who have played one more match – by 16 points with five games remaining. Thomas Tuchel’s side are in action against Monaco on Sunday evening, but they will line up in the knowledge that the league has now been wrapped up.

It’s the sixth league title in seven seasons for the Parisians, whose domestic dominance was only briefly interrupted by Monaco in 2016/17.

PSG had three chances to seal the title for themselves prior to Lille’s draw on Sunday, but they ended up spurning all three opportunities. They first drew against Strasbourg, embarrassingly lost 5-1 against Lille before losing again against Nantes on Thursday.

The goals conceded in those three games accounted for the club’s worst defensive record over a three-game spell since 1985.

Speaking after the previous defeat against Nantes, Tuchel was unable to defend his team’s performances, suggesting that all is not well behind the scenes.

“We can lose, we can do mistakes, and we [the club] will always defend players if they play with a good mentality, with desire and as a team,” he said, as per ?Goal. “I always defend my players, but today it’s not possible.”

PSG could go on to add to their growing trophy haul as they face off against Stade Rennais in the French cup final next Saturday.

Matthew Upson Insists ‘Outstanding’ Son Heung-min Deserved PFA Player of the Year Nomination

Former England defender Matthew Upson has insisted that Son Heung-min deserved to be nominated for the PFA Player of the Year after his excellent performances for Tottenham this season.

The nominations for the prestigious award were released on Saturday, but no Tottenham players featured. The six-man shortlist instead included three Manchester City players in Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva, two Liverpool stars, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

Heung-Min Son

Upson outlined his surprise at ?Son’s omission on BBC’s Football Focus programme, suggesting that it was harsh to leave out the South Korean after such an impressive season.

“?I can’t believe Son is not in the six, I really can’t,” said Upson, as per ?Football.London. “I would be definitely choosing Son, I think he has been absolutely outstanding.”

Despite having to leave the squad twice for international duty, Son has been ?Tottenham’s most prolific forward this season, registering 20 goals and 10 assists in all competitions

Son has also stepped up to the mark in the absence of ?Harry Kane on a number of occasions and Upson went on to discuss the fact that Tottenham will have to continue adapting until the end of the season.

“If you are going to be a Champions League semi-final squad, you are going to need variety and attacking players,” he added.

“I thought Lucas Moura offered something different as a threat with his movement and pace in behind [against Manchester City], so when you start to list those players, Son, Moura, Llorente, with ?Kane out of the team, it is looking good for Tottenham in that area.”

Chelsea vs Burnley: Sean Dyche’s Best Available Clarets Lineup

?Burnley travel to London to face ?Chelsea on Monday night, as the Clarets seem to have secured their Premier League survival once more.

Last week’s 2-0 win over ?Cardiff City looks to have brought ?Burnley out of a relegation battle with four games to spare, continuing their good form of three consecutive wins.

Sean Dyche has a full squad available for the trip to Stamford Bridge and it is unlikely that there will be many changes from the victory over Cardiff.

Here’s how the Clarets could line up ?against Chelsea on Monday.

Goalkeeper and Defenders

Mike Dean,Ben Mee

Tom Heaton (GK) – The 33-year-old has regained his place from Joe Hart as the ?Burnley number one during the second half of the season, making 15 consecutive starts.

Matthew Lowton (RB) – After an 11-game absence, Lowton has started the previous two league matches, both victories over ?Bournemouth and Cardiff.

James Tarkowski (CB) – The England international has missed just three Premier League games this season for Burnley and he should make his 100th appearance on Monday against ?Chelsea.

Ben Mee (CB) – Fortunate not to have conceded a penalty against Cardiff when Mike Dean decided to reverse his decision for Mee’s handball.

Charlie Taylor (LB) – Taylor was also on the right end of a questionable Dean decision after he brought down Aron Gunnarsson in the box during the second half.

Midfielders

Dwight McNeil

Jeff Hendrick (RM) – The versatile Irishman has made the switch from the middle to the right side of midfield since the turn of the year.

Jack Cork (CM) – Cork has started all but one of Burnley’s league games and the midfielder will return to Stamford Bridge to face his former club on Monday.

Ashley Westwood (CM) – No player has more assists to their name for Burnley than Westwood this season (seven).

Dwight McNeil (LM) – The 19-year-old has enjoyed a strong breakthrough season at Turf Moor and McNeil is in fine form, with two goals and an assist in his last four games.

Forwards

Ashley Barnes,Joe Bennett

Chris Wood (ST) – Last Saturday’s match winner, Wood’s brace against Cardiff took him into double figures in the Premier League this campaign.

Ashley Barnes (ST) – Barnes seems to love playing against the big six –  the Austrian international has scored against ?Arsenal, ?Manchester United and ?Tottenham this season.

Philippe Coutinho Explains Meaning Behind His Controversial Celebration Against Man Utd

?Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho has denied that his celebration against Manchester United on Tuesday night was an angry message to his critics.

The Brazilian scored a lovely third goal for the Catalan club as they beat United 3-0 in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final meeting, the result seeing his side through to the next round. After scoring, he proceeded to place his fingers in his ears and stare defiantly at the Camp Nou crowd, a gesture that many interpreted as Coutinho responding to Barça supporters who have been incensed by rumours linking him with a summer exit.

Philippe Coutinho

His celebration against the ?Red Devils was considered disrespectful by some ?Barcelona fans, who hissed at manager Ernesto Valverde’s decision to bring the 26-year-old on during Saturday’s 2-1 La Liga victory over Real Sociedad.

However, Coutinho believes that the situation has arisen out of a misunderstanding from Blaugrana supporters. Speaking after the win over Sociedad, he stated (as quoted by the ?Liverpool Echo): “I have always been someone who respects everybody.

The truth is that this (celebration) was for the people to see that I have to block out the sound in order to focus on a match or on my job so that it won’t affect me,” he explained. “It was like a liberation.”

Though there appears to be a growing rift between Coutinho and followers of the Spanish giants, the playmaker seemed hopeful of helping the club in their ?Champions League semi final tie against his former side ?Liverpool.

Asked about the match-up against his old teammates, Coutinho said: “It will be something special. I am anxious because I know that moment is coming.”

Arsenal 2-3 Crystal Palace: Report, Ratings & Reaction as Eagles Punish Sloppy Gunners

Crystal Palace capitalised on some sloppy defending from Arsenal to punish the Gunners with a stunning 3-2 victory at the Emirates in a thrilling Premier League clash on Sunday.

Palace stunned the hosts as they stormed into the lead through a strike from Christian Benteke 17 minutes into the game with his first goal in his last 20 Premier League appearances. Arsenal defended a set-piece poorly and allowed Benteke to head home with ease.?

?Arsenal made their intentions clear with a double substitution at half time, and the Gunners forced the issue early after the interval as Mesut Ozil fired home from close range after latching onto a through ball into the box from substitute Alex Iwobi.

The hosts looked to press on in search of another after drawing level, but it was ?Palace who provided the response as Wilfried Zaha punished a mistake from Shkodran Mustafi, forcing his way past the dithering defender before firing the ball past Bernd Leno to restore Palace’s lead.

Roy Hodgson’s side punished the Gunners on a set-piece once more as James McArthur flicked home a header from a corner following another scramble at the back from the home side. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang provided a glimmer of hope with 15 minutes remaining, firing home following some good build-up play from the Gunners, but Palace held on to claim all three points.

ARSENAL

Key Talking Point

Just three days on from an intense evening in Naples and with suspensions and injuries having kicked in, Unai Emery was always going to be forced into a significant rotation of his side on Sunday, and that made things difficult for the Gunners.

With Sokratis Papastathopoulos suspended, Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsey injured and Lucas Torreira only fit enough for the bench, Emery made seven changes to the side which won 1-0 against Napoli in midweek, with their replacements in the side not up to scratch.

Konstantinos Mavropanos and Matteo Guendouzi are fine young talents but still have a long way to go in establishing themselves as Premier League stars, as was seen against Palace, whilst Mohamed Elneny and Carl Jenkinson simply do not meet the required standards for Arsenal.

The Gunners upped the tempo in the second half, largely owing to Emery’s substitutions and change of shape after the interval, but Arsenal remained vulnerable at the back and were punished for some sloppy defending.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Leno (6); Mustafi (4), Koscielny (6), Mavropanos (5); Jenkinson (4), Guendouzi (6), Elneny (5), Kolasinac (5); Ozil (6); Lacazette (6), Aubameyang (6)

Substitutes: Iwobi (6), Maitland-Niles (6), Torreira (5)

STAR MAN –  In what was far from a vintage display from Arsenal, Alexandre Lacazette was the player who appeared most likely to make an impact for the home side, though the Frenchman was not helped by a lack of quality service from his teammates. Lacazette showed his desire and commitment once more by chasing back into his own half at times to find the ball, though he was unable to have the desired impact.

CRYSTAL PALACE

Key Talking Point

With Crystal Palace not under the threat of relegation and essentially playing their season to a close with little on the agenda, their game plan at the Emirates seemed very clear.

The Eagles were always going to fancy their chances of overpowering an Arsenal side which were without the suspended Papastathopoulos and the injured Xhaka on set-pieces, and that certainly proved to be the case.

Benteke headed the opener with a level of ease which Emery would have loathed to see, and Roy Hodgson’s side continued to hit Arsenal every time they dropped their withered guard as the Eagles left the Emirates stunned.

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Guaita (5); Wan-Bissaka (7), Kelly (5), Dann (6), Ward (6); McArthur (7), Milivojevic (7), Kouyate (7), Meyer (6); Benteke (6), Zaha (7)

Substitutes: Ayew (5), Townsend (5)

STAR MAN – Crystal Palace made life extremely difficult for a struggling Arsenal side on Sunday, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka turned in yet another strong performance for the Eagles at the Emirates. The Gunners typically boast a strong attacking threat through the likes of ?Aubameyang, Iwobi and Sead Kolasinac down the left flank, but Wan-Bissaka utilised his power and energy to strong effect in containing the home side.

Looking Ahead

?Arsenal face a tough trip to Molineux to take on Wolves in the Premier League on Wednesday before travelling to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester next Sunday.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace will look to build on their victory when they host Everton at Selhurst Park next Saturday.
