Arsenal 2-2 Crystal Palace: Match report & 4 talking points as draw puts Liverpool on brink of Premier League title

Arsenal watched Liverpool move another step closer to Premier League glory on Wednesday night, as Crystal Palace left the Emirates Stadium with a deserved point.

Jakub Kiwior’s early goal was the strong start the Gunners would have been hoping for, until a clever Eberechi Eze volley cancelled out that advantage.

Leandro Trossard did put Arsenal back in front with a well-worked goal of their own, but an impressive Palace were ultimately worthy of more than a defeat and so few could argue with Jean-Philippe Mateta’s audacious lob put them back level at 2-2 and enduring the points were shared.

How the game unfolded

Arsenal needed less than three minutes to take the lead, coming from a set-piece. Martin Odegaard’s wide free-kick was perfectly flighted and an unmarked Kiwior, having easily escaped the lax attention of former teammate Eddie Nketiah, accurately powered a header past Dean Henderson.

Palace responded well, though, have a good sight of goal themselves when Daichi Kamada’s volley was deflected only just wide. From the resultant corner, Nketiah ought to have done better to direct a header goalwards when David Raya got no way near trying to claim the cross. More Raya hesitancy as Nketiah chased a ball into the left channel almost saw it break to Justin Devenny.

Midway through the first half, Declan Rice didn’t miss by much when the ball sat up kindly for him to strike at the edge of the box. But Palace were good value for their equaliser when Eze, looking almost disinterested to avoid catching the attention of Arsenal defenders, took up position on the edge of the box and guided a volley in off the post after Adam Wharton’s deliberate cutback corner.

Nketiah ought to have got a quickfire Palace second, only to be denied by a timely Kiwior block as he tried to roll the Polish defender with his back to goal, six yards out.

But Arsenal went back in front in the last few moments before the interval. Jurrien Timber deserves credit for the way he drove forward with the ball, firing a pass into the feet of Trossard, who managed to dig out a shot from under his feet that crept into the bottom corner.

Raya’s earlier twitchiness didn’t improve after the break. He looked unsure of himself and was bailed out a couple of times. Either side of an instinctive save to parry Marc Guehi’s flick-on header, he tipped a looping ball over the bar after Devenny got a header all wrong, and flapped as Daniel Munoz nodded across the face of goal, without a Palace shirt connecting.

Arsenal thought they had extended their lead with a quarter of the game left, when Gabriel Martinelli turned in Timber’s hook into the middle. An offside flag went up on the Dutchman, which VAR found to be erroneous, but the ball had just gone out of play, so the goal was ruled out.

Henderson threw up a reactive hand to stop substitute Bukayo Saka from converting after arriving late in the box from the far post. That proved to be doubly important, because instead of going 3-1 down, Palace suddenly found themselves level, not undeservedly, through Mateta.

It was a poor pass from William Saliba that was picked off, with Mateta spotting Raya off his line and successfully going for the ambitious lob from 25 yards out.

As the Emirates started to empty in stoppage time, an emboldened Palace pushed a potential winner, but a draw was a fair result for both sides in the end.

Bukayo Saka aside, Mikel Arteta went with the strongest XI available to him.

Due to this game being pulled forward to make way for Crystal Palace’s FA Cup commitments, Arsenal have no weekend fixture and the best part of a full week before they are due to host Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

Saka is a different case as a result of missing almost four months earlier in the season and taking another knock, albeit a minor one, last weeken. But it generally makes more sense for Arteta to keep the team he wants to use against PSG in match practice in preparation for what is arguably the club’s biggest game since they played in the 2006 Champions League final.

It was wasn’t a fully rotated Crystal Palace lineup from Oliver Glasner, but Jean-Philippe Mateta, Will Hughes and Ismaila Sarr all began on the bench to stay fresh ahead of the weekend. Glasner also removed Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton well before the end when Palace were a goal behind.

The Eagles head to Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening for an FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa. It is the club’s 12th ever visit and they are hoping to reach only a third FA Cup final.

Ultimately, at stake for Palace at the end of the season could be a first ever major trophy. This performance will certainly give them confidence heading into the semi-final after a disappointing recent run since progressing from the quarters.

Even though it is inevitable that Liverpool will be crowned Premier League champions, the last thing Arsenal wanted was to hand the Reds that title without them even playing.

Defeat would have meant exactly that, so keeping things alive at least puts the onus back on Liverpool to seal it themselves when it gets to their weekend match against Tottenham Hotspur.

It does, however, mean that just a single point will now be enough.

Arsenal fans feared that Gabriel’s season-ending injury would be hugely detrimental to what remained of the campaign, especially with Jakub Kiwior doing little to inspire much confidence in his first 18 months with the club.

But the Pole has impressed since filling in and this game was a continuation of that. His early goal stands out as a big moment, but just as important was a perfectly-timed block to deny Eddie Nketiah a would-be goal to put Palace 2-1 ahead in the first half.

With PSG and in-form Ousmane Dembele to come, he’s hit form at the right time.

Arsenal 2-2 Crystal Palace: Player ratings as Gunners held by Mateta stunner

Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw by Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Wendesday night.

The result wasn’t enough to hand Liverpool the title without playing, with the Reds now needing just a single point from their next outing against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend to seal it.

An early Jakub Kiwior header looked like it would set the Gunners onto a comfortable win, but Palace weren’t short of chances and deservedly drew level in the first half through Eberechi Eze.

Leandro Trossard restored Arsenal’s lead shortly before the break, with a spectacular late strike from substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta ensuring the points would be shared.

Alexis Mac Allister breaks silence on Liverpool future amid Real Madrid links

After a flurry of transfer rumours spawned by comments from his father, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has belatedly addressed the controversial topic of his future.

Several corners of the Spanish press claimed that Real Madrid were monitoring the Argentine World Cup winner. Mac Allister has undoubtedly impressed after almost two years of continued consistency for Liverpool, although these links happened to coincidentally surface after the midfielder’s father, Carlos, left the door open to an exit in the future.

When faced with a wave of criticism, Carlos Mac Allister was forced to conduct another interview to clarify his comments, insisting that “Alexis is very happy in Liverpool”.

Having watched the drama unfold from the sidelines, Alexis himself confronted the speculation. “I read the rumours and the news reaches me, but the important thing is the present,” the 26-year-old told TyC Sports. “As much as the club wants me, if I play poorly this weekend, they’ll lose interest.”

“I’m fine at Liverpool and I don’t have any need,” Mac Allister continued. “So I have a lot of respect for the club and I don’t think it’s necessary to talk about other institutions.”

Mac Allister had a fleet of suitors after forcing his way into Argentina’s starting XI at the 2022 World Cup. It was the influence of Jurgen Klopp which persuaded him to swap Brighton for Merseyside, but he has continued to thrive under Arne Slot this term.

“I’m a bit remote, so some fans greet you with respect, but in the city they’re more passionate,” Mac Allister said of his life in Liverpool. “The institution is like a family. It all comes down to one phrase: You’ll never walk alone.

“The moment of the anthem is incredibly powerful. One of the most beautiful. The game doesn’t start until it finishes playing.”

Chelsea’s 6 rivals named in €70m Serhou Guirassy transfer battle

Chelsea are one of just seven clubs willing to trigger the release clause of Borussia Dortmund sharpshooter Serhou Guirassy this summer, a report in Germany has revealed.

The 29-year-old has thrived during his debut season at Signal Iduna Park, racking up 29 goals in 41 appearances for BVB, including a recent hat-trick against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Having blossomed at Stuttgart during the previous two campaigns, Guirassy now has several high-scoring seasons under his belt and has naturally attracted attention from other clubs on the continent – most notably the Premier League’s prolific spenders Chelsea.

The Blues, who have been linked to the Guinea international in past transfer windows, have been named as one of the select group capable of triggering Guirassy’s release clause – thought to be approximately €70m (£60m) – after this summer’s revamped FIFA Club World Cup. However, they are not alone.

According to Sky Sport Germany journalist Patrick Berger, Chelsea are one of five Premier League sides in a position to trigger the clause alongside Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United, while Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are also a threat. Whether any of the aforementioned sides make that move remains to be seen.

Berger has reassured Dortmund supporters that Guirassy currently has “no plans” to leave the club and with his contract running until 2028, the Bundesliga behemoths are in no rush to sell their star striker.

Dortmund are said to be “very happy” with Guirassy and view him as integral to their “rebuild” following a difficult campaign. The German outfit are in the unfamiliar depths of seventh and have just four games to make up the four-point gap to RB Leipzig in the division’s all-important top four.

Dejan Kulusevski blasts Tottenham after 18th Premier League defeat this season

Dejan Kulusevski delivered a damning verdict on Tottenham Hotspur’s bruising defeat to Nottingham Forest on Monday evening, labelling the team’s results as “not good enough”.

Spurs were beaten 2-1 by former manager Nuno Espirito Santo as Forest completed a rare double over the Lilywhites, with Richarlison’s late strike unable to overturn goals from Elliot Anderson and Chris Wood.

Tottenham managed 22 shots and created 2.14 expected goals but stumbled to their 18th Premier League defeat of the season, a result that left them languishing in 16th and much closer to the relegation zone than the top four when it comes to their points tally. Having reached the Europa League semi-finals last Thursday, it was a chastening reality check.

Head coach Ange Postecoglou is expected to be dumped at the end of the term regardless of success in the Europa League and Kulusevski is the latest to slam the underperforming Lilywhites.

“[The top clubs have] been doing it many years,” said the Swede when quizzed about Tottenham’s inconsistency. “They know exactly what they’re doing. They’re bringing in a lot of players that are ready to play both competitions. And they are prepared for it.

“This year we cannot say that we’re prepared for it because we had so many injuries and we did a lot of things wrong from the beginning of the season and we’re paying for it right now.

“After big nights like Thursday, you always go down. That’s why teams who are in more competitions are paying [a price]. We’re not handling it right, we’re not handling it well. Because after 16 minutes we’d conceded three goals, with the offside goal. Then it’s hard to win football games. It’s not good enough.”

He added: “The manager said the first 15 minutes cost us the game with the corners and free-kicks.

“[It’s] not good enough. We’ve got to improve. We’ve got to improve from crosses. I know we defended good on Thursday but we concede too many crosses and everybody must take responsibility and ask themselves why we concede so many crosses.”

Things don’t get much simpler for Spurs, who face table toppers Liverpool on Sunday, which could be the game the Reds win the Premier League title, before the crucial first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie with Norwegian underdogs Bodo/Glimt the following Thursday.
