Arsenal’s new Ozil? Who is MLS record-breaker Miguel Almiron?

There is no doubt that Atlanta United have transformed the world of Major League Soccer since the franchise began in 2016. Eschewing the established US model of combining promising domestic talents with middle of the road players or famous stars on the way out of football, the team coached by Gerardo Martino chose a different path.

Martino has spearheaded a team committed to landing the cream of young South American prospects, packing the squad with Under-23 hopefuls in a drastic departure from the norm.

Now, with reports Atlanta’s gem Miguel Almiron could be set for Arsenal, the Georgia team are looking to once more break new ground: as a stepping stone between South America and Europe for players blessed with everything it takes to break into football’s elite.

Still just 24, it is easy to see why the Paraguay international has caught the eye of those in charge at the Emirates Stadium. Almiron is the epitome of a 21st-century playmaker: strong in the pass, equipped with outstanding vision and technical ability, but also with the physical attributes to match.

His finesse around the penalty area has allowed Josef Martinez to become MLS’s most lethal striker. But Almiron does not just provide goals. To his 14 assists so far this season he has added a further 12 goals, meaning that in 32 league games he has participated in almost a goal a game.

Already a three-time national champion, twice with first club, Cerro Porteno of Paraguay and then in Argentina where he inspired a swashbuckling Lanus team to glory, he is an integral part of the Atlanta team that is now gunning for the MLS title as they wait for playoffs to commence in November.

Almiron’s on-pitch style too marks him out as a perfect fit for Arsenal. Blink twice and you might be forgiven for seeing a South American clone of Mesut Ozil: the impossibly elegant manner he carries the ball, his wonderful mastery with both feet, neck held upright at all times like those legendary languid No.10s of old. His industry also marks him out as a natural replacement for Aaron Ramsey, widely tipped to be leaving Arsenal this summer.

Atlanta, however, will not let their star go for cheap. President Darren Eales reacted angrily to reports that Arsenal were close to a deal worth £11 million ($14.5m), and suggested the Gunners would have to up their price significantly in order to close a deal.

“So there were two clues as to why that was total nonsense: One was Eagles, not Eales,” he fired to 92.9 The Game, referring to a mispelling of his surname in initial reports. “And the other was the suggestion of £11 million because it would have to take at least triple that for me to even get out of bed and think about any bids for Almiron.”

Arsenal, meanwhile, have remained tight-lipped on the prospect of a move. It is also true that, no matter how good Almiron’s track record has been so far, that means little in the face of the step up in quality that a move to the Premier League would entail. Nothing that the Paraguayan has faced so far in MLS compares to the heightened competition which is the norm in England’s top flight, making any move by necessity a gamble on the Gunners’ part.

Not that ‘Miggy’ is not used to pushing himself. He faced the same challenge when leaving Cerro for the vastly superior Argentine Primera Division barely out of his 20s, and took Lanus to the title within 12 months. Next came the challenge of adapting to a new culture and language thousands of miles from home in the US, and yet another unqualified success.

As coach Martino explains, moreover, it is not merely Almiron’s outrageous statistics that mark him out as a star.

“Miguel has a commitment to the team, I’m talking about his commitment to winning the ball back, pressing, he’s a player that’s always working,” he said to reporters.

“He’s an atypical number 10. Because he gives you everything that a number 10 gives you and he probably dispossesses players like a defensive midfielder. So as a player who always works hard, he’s never absent in a game, even a game where your team isn’t dominating the offensive facet of the game.”

It remains to be seen whether those qualities will convince Arsenal to part with over £30m. Nor is there any guarantee that, in spite of those striking similarities, Almiron will go on to enjoy a career as successful as that of the wonderful Ozil. But nevertheless, imagining that pair working in tandem in the Premier League from January onwards is a tantalising prospect, that should have all lovers of champagne football urging the Gunners to open their chequebook.

Ramsey has the upper hand in contract talks – Wenger

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes Aaron Ramsey could still stay at Arsenal, even though he acknowledged the midfielder is now in a position of power as he enters the final year of his deal.

Ramsey this week stressed he will not leave the Gunners in January but talks over an extension have collapsed ahead of his current contract expiring at the end of the 2018-19 season.

The Wales international, 27, was signed when Wenger was in charge in 2008 and the Frenchman was keen to tie down Ramsey’s long-term future before he left at the end of the previous campaign.

However, Wenger accepts Ramsey’s contract situation means he can now come to the negotiating table with a strong hand.

Asked whether he would give Ramsey a new deal, Wenger replied: “We tried that before and it still can happen.

“I don’t really know what’s happening at Arsenal. Sure, Aaron Ramsey is in a strong position now and he will use this position.

“But I don’t know how far Arsenal will go in terms of giving him a huge contract. These things were once my responsibility, but not anymore. I’m happy about that.”

Ajax rule out De Ligt sale in January, but admit he could leave in summer

Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars insists Matthijs de Ligt will not leave in January, yet he offered no assurances over the teenage defender’s future beyond this season.

Netherlands international De Ligt, 19, has been linked with Barcelona, Roma and Manchester City ahead of transfer windows across the continent reopening again in the new year.

On Friday, Goal reported that Man City and Barcelona were set to battle for De Ligt and his team-mate Frenkie De Jong.

Despite the interest in the defender, Overmars has confirmed he will not be leaving in January.

“The percentage that De Ligt leaves Ajax in January is zero per cent,” Overmars told LaRoma24.it.

However, Overmars was less certain on De Ligt’s future past this season.

Asked whether the defender could be sold in June, Overmars replied: “Yes, I confirm it is a possibility.”

De Ligt signed a four-year contract extension last year, with the deal lasting through 2021.

Man City refute ‘triple-salary’ Messi transfer claim

Manchester City have refuted claims that they offered to triple Lionel Messi’s salary in a bid to sign the Argentina international from Barcelona.

The Premier League champions say there is no truth to the suggestion, which surfaced in Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, that Pep Guardiola tried to persuade Messi to move to the Etihad Stadium on a deal that would have been worth more than £1 million per week.

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak was asked at a recent Q&A event which transfer near-miss he most regrets from his 10 years with the club.

A video posted to Twitter shows he replied, while laughing, “Messi”.

On Saturday, however, Mundo Deportivo ran an updated story, including quotes supposedly made by Al Mubarak, that revealed further details of City’s unsuccessful attempt.

City insist they “absolutely refute” this version of events, stating that Al Mubarak provided no extra information.

Goal understands that City had held a long-term interest in signing Messi, although the new deal he signed with Barca in November 2017 put paid to their hopes of luring him to England.

Indeed there are fresh reports that Messi is in line for yet another contract extension.

Barca are confident that they can tie him down for the remainder of his career, with club president Josep Maria Bartomeu telling the Times recently: “He doesn’t want to leave.

“We always tell him he can be a one-club man. That is his project too.”

Zinchenko open to Napoli switch as Ghoulam linked with Man Utd

Oleksandr Zinchenko is open to a move away from Manchester City after falling down Pep Guardiola’s pecking order, with Italy his preferred destination, according to the player’s agent.

The Ukraine international has been third-choice left-sided full-back for the champions this season, behind Benjamin Mendy and Fabian Delph, and at one stage in the summer had looked set to depart for Napoli.

Talks with the Serie A club collapsed after no agreement was reached with City over the terms of a possible transfer, but in an interview with Radio Marte , Zinchenko’s agent, Alan Prudnikov, reaffirmed his client’s desire to leave Manchester for Italy in order to re-start his career.

“We are always open to proposals coming from Italy,” said Prudnikov.

“Napoli showed interest both over the summer and the year before, but never managed to find an agreement with Manchester City.

“I met with [Napoli director Cristiano] Giuntoli and we laid down the foundations of a deal with Zinchenko, but the two clubs could not agree on a fee. We’d be ready to discuss it again, though.”

A deal for the Ukrainian would suit Napoli, who are themselves preparing for the possible departure of current left-back, Algerian international Faouzi Ghoulam.

Manchester United have reportedly already lodged a £40 million ($52.6m) bid for the defender, with Liverpool also interested.

Jose Mourinho is ready to sanction a contract of £100,000 a week for Ghoulam, more than doubling the player’s current deal, as he looks to bolster a defence rocked by a string of defeats in the season’s early weeks.

Naples-based Radio Kiss reported that Napoli are reluctant to sell at the price offered, but could be tempted by an increased bid from Old Trafford.

And landing the services of Zinchenko, who has played just 16 times for City since arriving from the Russian club Ufa in 2016, could be a deciding factor in Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti allowing Ghoulam to move to the red side of Manchester.

Napoli are second in Serie A, having fallen short of catching champions Juventus last term, whom they currently trail.by six points.
