Why Man Utd might not sign anyone else before transfer deadline

Manchester United may struggle to sign a central midfielder before the transfer deadline next week because any further new arrivals need to be funded by player sales.

United have landed Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane this summer for £73m and £41m respectively, strengthening key positions that needed addressing, but deficiencies in a lacklustre performance against Southampton on Sunday underlined the need for a midfield player.

The likes of Ruben Neves, Yves Bissuma and Eduardo Camavinga are thought to be available for £40m or less. However, United haven’t been immune to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic and transfer funds are limited.

The Athletic writes that United will not sign any more players ahead of the deadline unless sales are made first. That could include the likes of Jesse Lingard, who remains of interest to West Ham, but the chance of any outgoing transfers at this stage is considered ‘low’.

United are ‘not closed off to offers’, but with Lingard, for example, West Ham have hesitated in taking things forward because of the £30m asking price.

The payment structures for both the Sancho and Varane deals have been spread over multiple seasons, which isn’t uncommon, crucially suppressing the initial cost of the transfers this year.

If United went back into the market for another player before Tuesday night’s deadline they would hope for a deal that comes with a similarly low initial investment.

But aside from pursuing any permanent transfers, a loan might be the best solution to tick that box of allowing United to strengthen in midfield without the need to sell first.

Saul Niguez is the obvious option in that sense after Atletico Madrid made the Spaniard available. The only problem is that Chelsea are already believed to have made a more concrete approach of their own, with the player himself given the freedom to choose his own destination.

Mikel Arteta urges booing Arsenal fans to be patient

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has urged fans to be patient and show their support for the team while the squad rebuild and transition period is still ongoing.

The Gunners have spent close to £130m on five new players so far this summer, ticking off every position they had been targeting – full-back, centre-back, goalkeeper and two midfielders.

But it has already been a very difficult start to the season. Arsenal were soundly beaten by newly promoted Brentford on the opening night of the campaign and were then outplayed by a Chelsea side not yet at full pace in their maiden home game at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal face West Brom in the EFL Cup second round on Wednesday night, a product of not having European football this season for the first time since 1995/96, but things then get tougher again with a trip to face Manchester City in the Premier League before the end of the month.

There were boos at the Emirates on Sunday when the Gunners were second best against Chelsea and it has already been reported that Arteta may only the next four league games after facing City to save his job – against Norwich, Burnley, Tottenham and Brighton.

The boss has now called on fans to get behind the team and understand that the process of rebuilding a squad is not a quick one.

“I think [fans] tried to support the team very much and I know they are disappointed when you lose at home, there has to be some reaction, but this is a project that is going to take some time,” Arteta explained in an honest interview with Arsenal.com.

“You can see and tell from the recruitment that we’ve done and the really young squad that we have at the moment and it cannot happen overnight.

“We all want to make it as quick as possible and we know that the responsibility for us it to fight with the top teams in every competition and that’s not going to change, and I think we really need them and this group of players really needs them and the club needs them now next to us because we need that confidence, that support and that energy.”

EFL Cup roundup: Aston Villa, Norwich, Wolves & Leeds win big

Aston Villa, Leeds, Wolves and Norwich were big winners in Tuesday night’s EFL Cup second round fixtures, all winning comfortably against lower league opposition to progress in the competition.

Everton, Brentford, Brighton and Watford were also victorious. There were no giant killings and Crystal Palace, who lost narrowly to Watford in the only all-Premier League tie of the night, were the sole top-flight team to be eliminated.

A heavily-rotated Aston Villa thrashed League Two side Barrow on the road, with teenage striker Cameron Archer netting a hat-trick. Two other goals came from Anwar El-Ghazi, who also bagged two assists, while Frederic Guilbert additionally found the net.

Norwich were the other 6-0 winners from the Premier League, taking Bournemouth apart at Carrow Road only days after being smashed themselves by Manchester City. Canaries debutant Christos Tzolis and USA international Josh Sargent each scored twice.

Leeds had to wait until late on to secure their 3-0 win against Crewe, with the goals from Kalvin Phillips and Jack Harrison all coming in the final 12 minutes.

Wolves battered a rather hopeless Nottingham Forest, who currently prop up the Championship in 24th place, but also waited until the second half for all four goals, which came from Romain Saiss, Daniel Podence, Trincao and Morgan Gibbs-White.

Everton, who played the final half hour against Huddersfield with ten players after Moise Kean was sent off, won 2-1 courtesy of Andros Townsend’s 79th-minute winner. Brentford kept up their solid start to the season by seeing off Forest Green 3-1, while Brighton won 2-0 against Cardiff.

Man City & PSG not interested in Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester City and Paris Saint-German do not currently hold an interest in signing Cristiano Ronaldo this month, 90min understands.

The 36-year-old has been told by Juventus that they will not stand in his way if he wants to leave and he could be available for less than £30m.

However, Ronaldo’s mammoth wage is the main obstacle to any deal as he is still one of the highest paid players on the planet on around £900,000 per week.

Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes has been working in recent days to see whether a transfer can be engineered, although he only has a handful of clubs to engage with as the Portuguese legend will only consider a side that is capable of winning the Champions League and the huge financial implications must also be considered.

That led Mendes to Man City and PSG, however, it is unlikely Ronaldo will get his wish at this stage.

Club sources have confirmed to 90min that, as it stands, neither have an interest in making a move for Ronaldo and that is not expected to change before the end of the month.

Ronaldo is open to the idea of returning to the Premier League and City are in his sights – despite his history with neighbours United.

French outlet L’Equipe reported on Tuesday night that the Portugal captain has gone to the extent of contacting his compatriots in the City squad – namely Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo – to discuss a move, while there are a number of players who could be used as makeweights, including Silva and Aymeric Laporte.

However, United fans can rest easy because a City offer for Ronaldo is not expected any time soon. The Citizens have been looking for a new frontman this summer and had targeted Tottenham’s Harry Kane, and while that interest remains, they look set to end the window with just one new signing in the shape of Jack Grealish, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy refusing to negotiate.

PSG have also told Mendes that they are not currently interested, and that was even with the knowledge that they are in talks with Real Madrid over the sale of Kylian Mbappe.

Les Parisiens do want a new striker, but that could very well be Everton’s Brazilian star Richarlison. It is understood the Toffees will sell at the right price and talks have taken place.

Twitter erupts amid Cristiano Ronaldo & Kylian Mbappe transfer speculation

Social media was stunned on Tuesday night by claims that Cristiano Ronaldo has decided he wants to join Manchester City from Juventus. Almost simultaneously, it was revealed that Real Madrid have entered talks with Paris Saint-Germain to try to strike a deal for Kylian Mbappe.

With less than a week of the transfer window remaining, the world was not expecting two seismic stories on the same evening.

Ronaldo, who won three Premier League titles and the Champions League with Manchester United in the formative years of his historic career, is out of contract at Juventus at the end of the season and his future has become increasingly uncertain.

But despite Ronaldo’s apparent desire to join City, 90min understands that the club is not interested as things stand. Their belief is that they can still land Tottenham star Harry Kane.

As for Mbappe, meanwhile, Real have informed PSG of their willingness to pay up to €160m this summer, which has triggered transfer talks between the two clubs.

That marks a significant step forwards because PSG rebuffed Real’s previous advance. There is no deal yet but they are now happy to start listening after a number has been put on the table.

A lot of reaction has been pure disbelief that it has even come to this.

Although not necessarily on the cards, plenty of City fans expressed excitement about the idea of Ronaldo returning to England to join their club.

Plenty of people are already imagining a savage Manchester derby day.

But not all City fans appear to be convinced that Ronaldo is actually worth it.

And there is some debate among fans as to whether Ronaldo or Kane would be the better option.

A Manchester United legend, Ronaldo once said he could never be swayed by City.

United fans are adamant he would never turn his back on that legacy.

Real have been wanting this to happen for absolutely ages.

Fans are also loving it.

This is not 2015-2018 Real Madrid, but Mbappe has long dreamed of wearing that white kit.

But so comes the realisation of what this would mean for PSG’s ‘dream team’.

PSG fans are lashing out to make losing Mbappe easier to cope with.

Sorry, Barcelona.
