Roberto Martinez provides update on his future as Belgium head coach

Roberto Martinez has confirmed he will remain as Belgium head coach despite his side’s poor showing at Euro 2020 and constant speculation linking him with a return to club management.

The former Everton boss has been touted as a potential replacement for a number of outgoing bosses at high-profile clubs this summer, with links only growing stronger after the Red Devils suffered a shock quarter-final exit at this summer’s European Championship.

Despite rumours his time at the helm of Belgium could soon be coming to an end, Martinez has now confirmed he will continue in the role and that he’s relishing the return of the Nations League in October.

“There has been a lot of talk about my future, before, during and after the tournament,” he said as reported by HLN. “I always find it hard to talk about myself because this isn’t about me. It’s about creating the best possible conditions in which footballers can work and develop.

“I still see a lot of energy in this group and this project is still on the rise. This team is now ready to move on, to get back on the field. September can’t come soon enough. Afterwards there is the Nations League.”

Belgium’s failure at yet another international tournament has led many to suggest their so-called ‘golden generation’ have missed their chance to secure major honours.

However, Martinez believes he’ll be able to retain the core of the group and isn’t expecting any imminent announcements from his side regarding international retirement.

“Nobody thinks about quitting,” he said. “The players of this team immediately spring up and want to continue, to do better. On the other hand, there are also no players that I am dissatisfied with and will therefore no longer call. The players have not failed at this tournament.”

Looking ahead to the future, Martinez says he’s excited by the next crop of Belgian players already making a name for themselves with the national team, adding that the next 12 months are going to be a key time for their development.

“There is a list of twelve young players who are already involved in the national team,” he added. “Four of them have already tasted several times: Jeremy Doku, Zinho Vanheusden, Charles De Ketelaere and Yari Verschaeren.

“The next 12 months are going to be very important for them, they have to dare to compete with the older guard. Our job is to put the young people in the right environment, to create conditions in which they can perform, after that you have to let football decide.”

With Martinez moving to clear up any speculation regarding his own future, attention soon turned to his assistant Thierry Henry, though he could provide no such assurances that the Arsenal legend would remain in his current role.

“At the moment, no decision has been made about a possible collaboration in the future,” he continued. “Much will depend on his personal situation, whether or not he is working for a club. But it is clear that the relationship between him and the national team is very good.”

Everton launch new 2021/22 home kit

Everton have launched their new 2021/22 home shirt by Hummel, which is a vibrant design inspired by the ‘dazzle camouflage’ patterns that were painted on naval ships in Liverpool’s city docks during the First World War. Everton will also be moving to a new dockside stadium in 2024.

Dazzle camouflage features contrasting shapes, tones and colours, with such patterns applied to ships to help disguise their size, speed, distance and direction from enemies, making them harder to be accurately fired upon.

Everton have opted for a two-tone blue dazzle camouflage, which is complemented by white and yellow trim. The shirt also features the instantly recognisable Hummel chevrons on the sleeves.

On sale from 15 July but available to pre-order from the club’s official online shop already, it will be the first time that Everton fans can choose to buy either the men’s or women’s replica shirt.

The men’s team jersey is sponsored by car sales brand Cazoo, but the women’s team have their own shirt sponsorship deal with Russian telecoms company MegaFon. Each version is available in both men’s and women’s sizes, giving fans plenty of choice.

Seamus Coleman, James Rodriguez, Allan, Richarlison, Izzy Christiansen and Danielle Turner have all been involved in the launch material of the new shirt.

The Toffees have also released a new home goalkeeper kit that could well divide opinion. To be worn by Jordan Pickford and Sandy MacIver, the black jersey features abstract yellow stripes on the front, as well as single blue stripe, giving it as very vibrant look.

Everton finished 10th in the Premier League and fifth in the WSL last season, with the ambitious club hoping to see improvement for both of its team in this new campaign that kicks off soon.

Albert Sambi Lokonga set to undergo Arsenal medical

Anderlecht midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga will undergo a medical with Arsenal ahead of the completion of his switch to the Emirates.

The 21-year old Belgian has been linked with Mikel Arteta’s side for a while this summer, with an opening bid of around £13m reportedly being rejected by Anderlecht in the middle of June.

However, according to Belgian journalist Sven Claes, the deal is set to be completed soon, with Lokonga undergoing a medical on Friday. Should he successfully complete the medical tests, the 21-year old would join his new team mates next week for pre-season in Scotland.

Lokonga is a highly-rated box to box midfielder, noted for his ability to carry the ball past the opposition press and expand the game with his passing ability. He has been integral to Anderlecht since the 2019/20 campaign, making 56 Jupiler Pro League appearances over the last two seasons and helping the club to a third-placed finish last term.

The midfielder has also earned recognition on the international scene, having represented Belgium at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 levels. Lokonga has also been called up to the senior side by Roberto Martinez, although didn’t manage to get off the bench in the country’s warm-up matches prior to Euro 2020.

This summer is shaping up to be a big one for Arsenal, with a lot of business planned ahead of the start of the season. Lokonga may not be the incoming this window, with a deal for Benfica’s Nuno Tavares also reportedly agreed, while Lyon’s Houssem Aouar is still on Arteta’s radar.

Arsenal have so far parted ways with David Luiz, who was released, while Matteo Guendouzi has joined Marseille on loan.

Liverpool prepare €40m bid for Saul Niguez

Liverpool are believed to be preparing an offer of around €40m (£34.4m) for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, with both the Spanish club and the player open to a potential transfer.

It’s well noted that the Reds are in need of some reinforcements in the middle of the park this summer after the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum. There were some reports that they wouldn’t look to replace him and instead promote from within, but the noise coming from Anfield suggests they are looking to recruit a new midfielder.

They have been linked with a cabal of potential Wijnaldum replacements, ranging from Youri Tielemans to Renato Sanches via Hoffenheim’s Christoph Baumgartner. But one rumour which seems to have gathered some momentum recently is that of Atletico Madrid star Saul.

News of Liverpool’s interest first emerged from Spain earlier this week, with La Razon vaguely claiming that Liverpool were looking at Saul, and that Atleti were prepared to talk.

But the story has now been taken a step further by AS, who claim that Liverpool are now ‘preparing a bid’ in the region of €40m for the 26-year-old.

It’s understood that the La Liga champions are looking for a bit more than the reported fee on the table for Saul, but the days in which they could command close to €100m for his services have been and gone. While he played a part in their famous title win last season, his stock has fallen with some inconsistent performances, and he was even left out of the Spain squad for this summer’s Euros.

Should he stay, he will have a role to play under Diego Simeone. But his gametime dropped dramatically last season, and with the imminent arrival of Rodrigo De Paul from Udinese, he has a battle on his hands to hold onto a first-team spot.

All that taken into consideration, Saul himself feels it may be time to move on, and believes the Premier League could be an exciting next step.

Elsewhere, it’s claimed that Liverpool have made an enquiry for another Spain international in Wolves’ Adama Traore. This one comes from Football Insider, but 90min did also report back in June that the Reds held an interest in the winger.

It was believed then that Wolves were prepared to sell him in order to raise funds, but whether Liverpool will be prepared to meet their asking price after an indifferent season in which the 25-year-old struggled for long spells remains to be seen.

Jose Mourinho defends recent Premier League record at Roma unveiling

Jose Mourinho has moved to defend his Premier League record after being asked about his recent achievements in England during his unveiling as Roma’s new manager.

The Portuguese tactician is one of the most decorated managers ever to grace the Premier League, having won three English crowns across two different spells with Chelsea.

Despite his glittering spells with the Blues, the 58-year-old failed to win the league title in both of his most recent managerial posts in England – having taken charge of Manchester United and Tottenham – yet Mourinho insists he’s been a success at every Premier League club he’s taken charge of.

“At my last three clubs I won the Premier League with Chelsea, I won three cups with Manchester United, I made it into the League Cup final with Tottenham,” he told reporters (via Sky Sports).

“We finished 12th the year before and then we came sixth and qualified for the Europa League. What is considered a disaster for me is something that other coaches have never achieved in their lifetimes.”

Mourinho was speaking at a press conference to officially unveil him as Paulo Fonseca’s successor in the Italian capital, with the former United boss speaking of the pressures that come with being manager of a club with such passionate fans.

He added that it would take him some time to evaluate his Roma squad before deciding what changes need to be made, amid rumours that Granit Xhaka may be on the cusp of joining from Arsenal.

“There is a fantastic bond between Roma and the city and that brings a lot of responsibility with it and I feel that, but we are not here on holiday, we are here to work,” he added. “The next challenge is always the most important, this is the next challenge so it is the most important.

“We are not going to change things when we are not yet aware of everything we have within the group. It is very important to get to know them.”
