Potential destinations for Miralem Pjanic – ranked

Barcelona’s decision to sell Arthur to Juventus in exchange for Miralem Pjanic and £5m got enough ridicule last summer, but things have hit a whole new level these days.

After an underwhelming debut season, Barcelona are now so desperate to get rid of Pjanic that they are prepared to let him leave the club for free. Finding a suitor might be tricky, but there are a handful of sides who have been tipped to launch bids, either permanent or loan, for the Bosnian.

Let’s take a look at which destination would be best.

We all know that Manchester United want a new central midfielder this summer, but there’s absolutely no way Pjanic is going to be their man.

United have learned from past mistakes and no longer pursue ageing, underperforming players, and that’s before you think about how little they would want to pay his huge contract.

It’s not happening. Next.

Just like United, Chelsea are hunting for a new midfielder, but they want someone more defensive than Pjanic – Jorginho is a better version of Pjanic so landing the Bosnian makes no sense.

Chelsea are chasing more long-term targets, like Declan Rice or Aurelien Tchouameni, and they have made their preferences clear.

Besides, we all know just how much Chelsea love signing high-earning players on the wrong side of 30.

Pjanic is keen on a return to Italy, where AC Milan have been tipped to offer him a new home.

I Rossoneri could do with a little more depth in that position, but they’re unlikely to turn to Pjanic because he probably wouldn’t be a regular starter.

The midfield duo of Franck Kessie and Ismael Bennacer were very impressive last year and won’t be losing their spots, so a high-earning backup will be out of the equation.

Rafa BenitezRafa Benitez

Pjanic feels like the most Everton signing ever. The Toffees love these big names and usually don’t put much thought in when signing them.

They’d give Pjanic a new home and likely pay him a tidy salary, but whether they can actually convince the Bosnian to move to Goodison Park is a different question entirely.

The Carlo Ancelotti appeal is gone, meaning Everton don’t have much to glam up the fact they finished tenth last season. No European football might be too much.

Pjanic’s preferred choice would be a return to Juventus, with whom he spent three impressive years (and one underwhelming one) before he left for Barcelona.

Juventus are obvious fans of Pjanic and love the chance to make a cut-price signing, and they could actually do with another central midfielder to make up the numbers.

Unfortunately, Juve would prefer that new signing to be Sassuolo’s Manuel Locatelli, so Pjanic will only ever be their Plan B.

Links to Tottenham write themselves because of the presence of former Juve director Fabio Paratici, who will be pushing for Pjanic’s signature.

Spurs could do with a little more creativity in midfield, where Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Winks were guilty of a few underwhelming showings on that side of the ball. Pjanic would definitely fix that.

His wages may be high, but as the signing of Gareth Bale proved to us, Spurs are prepared to shell out when they need to if the deal is right. Don’t rule this one out.

If you want a move to Italy, joining the reigning Serie A champions isn’t a bad shout.

Inter have a boat-load of central midfielders already, but besides Nicolo Barella and Marcelo Brozovic, you could argue that Pjanic would be an upgrade on a few of them.

Roberto Gagliardini, Stefano Sensi and maybe Matias Vecino could all be replaced, so Pjanic would have a good shot at regular minutes if he joined up.

How Barcelona should slash €200m from wage budget in order to re-sign Lionel Messi

Barcelona’s finances are in a sorry state, and they need to sell a number of players this transfer window.

Hang on, this all sounds very familiar…

Bill Murray Well Its Groundhog Day Again GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Oh yeah! That’s right, Barça pretty much put their whole squad on the transfer list following their 8-2 humiliation by Bayern Munich last summer. They managed to offload Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal, Luis Suarez, Nelson Semedo and Rafinha, but they’re still in disarray.

Because of La Liga’s salary cap rules, Barcelona now need to free up €200m (£170m) from their wage bill in order to register any of their new signings – and that includes current free agent Lionel Messi.

Players are going to need to take pay cuts across the board and there are going to be some tough calls for club president Joan Laporta to make this transfer window. Luckily for him, I’ve made some of them for him, even without reliable sources to tell me how much these players actually make. No need to thank me, Joan!

Here are the players Barça need to sell in order to re-sign Messi and register the likes of Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay.

Sergio BusquetsSergio Busquets

Busquets has been at Barcelona since 2005 / Aitor Alcalde Colomer/Getty Images

Age: 32 (33 soon, but he’s 32 til he’s 33, that’s how it works)
Position: DM
Possible destinations: MLS
Estimated yearly salary: 10 Michus

Roy Keane’s assessment of Busquets at Euro 2020 perfectly sums up the midfielder: “He can’t run, can’t tackle, but in a possession-based team, he passes forward and nine times out of ten he makes the right choice.”

Unfortunately for Busquets, he makes a hell of a lot of money and is on the decline. Barcelona need to cash in.

Antoine GriezmannAntoine Griezmann

Age: 30
Position: CF/LW/RW
Possible destinations: Man City, PSG
Estimated yearly salary: 1,500,000 copies of Football Manager

Barcelona’s pursuit of Tony G was always weird. He plays in the exact same position as Messi, but if he doesn’t, then you have to shoehorn him in and get half the player he can be. Doesn’t really sound like a wise use of €120m.

Luckily for Barça, Man City could be prepared to take Griezmann off their hands as they seek alternative forward options to Harry Kane. It’d be a huge let-off for the Blaugrana if that were to be the case.

Miralem PjanicMiralem Pjanic

Age: 31
Position: CM
Possible destinations: Tottenham, Juventus
Estimated yearly salary: 840,000,000 Freddos

Why is Pjanic at Barcelona again? Oh right. They essentially swapped him with Arthur so that themselves and Juventus could balance their books. Good one, lads.

A fine player in his prime no doubt, but Barça are well stocked in midfield and, as you’ve probably guessed by now, could do with shifting his wages.

Ousmane DembeleOusmane Dembele

Age: 24
Position: RW/LW
Possible destinations: PSG, Arsenal, Tottenham
Estimated yearly salary: 2,400,000 Fortnite skins

Injuries have been the bane of Dembele’s Barça career, and he’s often been linked with a move away from Camp Nou. With the club in desperate need of funds, now is the right time for him to move on. try and prove to be a success elsewhere.

Philippe CoutinhoPhilippe Coutinho

Age: 29
Position: AM/LW
Possible destinations: Milan, Everton, PSG
Estimated yearly salary: 80,000 Borussia Dortmund season tickets

Dear lord, what a sad little signing, Barcelona.

Not many teams can claim to have spent nine figures on a player who then proceeded to score against them in an 8-2 loss while he was still contracted to the club. Coutinho’s Barça spell has been a disaster, and agent Kia Joorabchian has already been tasked with finding him a new club.

Samuel UmtitiSamuel Umtiti

Age: 27
Position: CB
Possible destinations: Arsenal, Lyon, Zenit
Estimated yearly salary: 2,400,000 downloads of that France World Cup winning song on iTunes

Poor Umtiti has been ravaged by injury in recent years, making just 49 appearances for Barcelona in the last three seasons.

But this is a cut-throat business. Barcelona need the money a lot more than they need another player who’s rarely ever fit.

Apparently Arsenal want Neto? Err, okay, sure. Take him. Thanks for popping by.

Roma close to signing Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio

Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio is closing in on a summer transfer to Roma, where he will link up with fellow countryman and new Giallorossi coach Jose Mourinho at Stadio Olimpico.

The expected transfer will see Patricio bid farewell to Molineux three years after arriving in England following a controversial exit from first club Sporting CP in 2018.

Patricio has only missed two Premier League games since joining Wolves, helping the club achieve consecutive seventh place finishes in 2018/19 and 2019/20. But with only one year now left on his contract, there is an opportunity to bring in decent money for the 33-year-old.

Fabrizio Romano writes that an agreement between the clubs is ‘close’ following an ‘official bid’ from Roma worth an initial €10m (£8.6m) and an extra €3m (£2.6m) in add-ons.

Patricio, who has 97 senior caps for Portugal and won Euro 2016 with his country, will replace Pau Lopez as Roma number one. Lopez, who was briefly on loan at Spurs earlier in his career, is moving to join Marseille, where veteran club captain Steve Mandanda recently turned 36.

Wolves officials have already informed new coach Bruno Lage that some of the club’s highest earners and most valuable assets will have to be sold this summer if there are to be enough funds available for sufficient reinvestment in the squad following a disappointing 12th place finish.

With Patricio already on the way out, Wolves will also listen to offers for Ruben Neves, who is valued in excess of £30m, and Adama Traore, who remains a firm target for Leeds and has been of interest to Liverpool in the relatively recent past.

Arsenal have already held talks over Neves, but Manchester United are also still very keen on the 24-year-old midfielder and 90min has been told that Bruno Fernandes has already given a glowing reference of his international colleague.

A new report from O Jogo in Portugal also suggests that Wolves will sell 50% of their ownership in full-back Ruben Vinagre to Sporting CP. That deal would take the form of an initial loan, followed by a €10m (£8.6m) pay out next summer, with Wolves also entitled to 50% of a future transfer fee.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Olympiacos and Famalicao.

Marseille complete loan signing of Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi

Olympique Marseille have confirmed the loan signing of Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, securing the Frenchman’s future away from the Gunners for at least another year.

It was previously rumoured that the deal would include an obligation for Marseille to make it a permanent transfer next summer, but the Ligue 1 side have confirmed it is only an option.

Guendouzi spent most of last season on loan in Germany with Hertha BSC, having fallen out of favour with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Now 22, the Frenchman originally joined Arsenal from Lorient when he was still a teenager and featured 48 times in all competitions during his debut season under Unai Emery. But his opportunities decreased the following season and it became clear he had no future under Arteta.

A return to France to join an ambitious Marseille side that has already signed American teenager Konrad de la Fuente from Barcelona, Argentina defender Leonardo Belardi from Borussia Dortmund and Turkish winger Cengiz Under from Roma, could be the move that reignites his career.

Guendouzi will wear Marseille’s number six shirt, previously worn by, among others, French legend and 1993 Champions League winner Marcel Desailly, as well as Joey Barton.

Marseille finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season, which was enough to qualify for the Europa League group stage. They finished second in the final standings in 2020, as well as in 2013 and 2011, but haven’t been crowned French champions since 2010.

They and others will take hope from Lille showing last season that it is possible to break Paris Saint-Germain’s domestic dominance, winning their first title since 2011 against the odds.

Sergio Ramos to undergo medical at Paris Saint-Germain

Sergio Ramos’ move to Paris Saint-Germain is nearing completion with the Spaniard to undergo a medical before signing a two-year deal.

It was recently confirmed Ramos would not be extending his stay with Real Madrid, bringing an end to a trophy-laden 16-year spell at the club.

The former Real captain claimed he intended to pen fresh terms at the Santiago Bernabeu – a move which would have seen him remain in Madrid until 2022 – but the offer made by the club had been taken off the table once he decided to accept the deal.

Since news of his exit became public knowledge a whole host of European clubs have been credited with an interest in the veteran centre back, yet PSG have remained as frontrunners in the race to secure his signature.

Said move is now one step closer to becoming a reality, with The Guardian reporting that Ramos will undergo a medical prior to signing a two-year deal at Parc des Princes.

While Ramos undoubtedly brings with him a wealth of experience having played top-level football for the last 17 years, questions remain over his fitness.

The Spain international featured just once for Real in the final two months of the 2020/21 season due to injury, and even then he picked up a knock in their Champions League semi-final defeat to Chelsea.

If Ramos can stay fit then he’ll add experience and quality to the PSG backline as they look to wrestle their Ligue 1 title off Lille as well as competing in the Champions League.

Les Parisiens have wasted no time at all in making some big moves this summer, with Ramos’ signing expected to be confirmed alongside the arrivals of talented Milan youngster Gianluigi Donnarumma and Inter’s Achraf Hakimi.

Mauricio Pochettino’s squad has also already been bolstered by the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum, while the club are working on a deal to secure the arrival of Moise Kean from Everton after his impressive loan spell last season.
