Kevin De Bruyne: How Man City’s Returning Hero Is an Invaluable Asset to an Already Outstanding Team

?Manchester City won the Premier League last year in spectacular fashion, overcoming the relentless force of Liverpool to seal a second successive league title by a single point.

Yet, that was somehow achieved without a significant piece of the puzzle missing.

?Kevin De Bruyne.

Kevin De Bruyne

The Belgian’s absence for the vast majority of last season through injury didn’t prove pivotal for Pep Guardiola’s side, which is rather remarkable when you consider how utterly sublime he is with a football at his feet.

On form, there are few better footballers in the world, let alone the ?Premier League, and if his showing in the ?win against Bournemouth is anything to go by: he’s back. And with a bang.

There have been occasions already this season that will leave opposing teams watching on trembling in their boots.

An opening day hammering of ?West Ham showed the league that ?City are quite content to brush teams aside, even away from home, with their devastating attack not taking any prisoners on their march towards a third-successive league title.

Kevin De Bruyne

Despite somehow drawing 2-2 with Tottenham in their following game, given their absolute dominance, De Bruyne once again oozed class, with his assist for Raheem Sterling one particular moment that left City fans – and any fan of football for that matter – drooling.

With otherworldly talent in each boot, it was another Belgian masterclass on Saturday as the Citizens saw off the ?Cherries 3-1. Once again, De Bruyne pulled the strings in midfield, suffocating Eddie Howe’s side of the ball with his immense ability to retain possession and pick a pass through the eye of a needle.

When you bask in the majesty this City side demonstrated last season, you wonder how can a team so successful possibly be upgraded?

Kevin De Bruyne.

To achieve what they did last campaign, without the 28-year-old for large parts, was nothing short of spectacular, but by adding the midfield maestro into the side, you’re simply adding reliability and efficiency to what was already the most well-oiled machine in the country.

What was clear to see at Dean Court is that with De Bruyne in the side, other players are able to flourish and perform their duties to the highest order.

Operating in a slightly deeper role, it allowed ?David Silva to push further forward, where his lower centre of gravity becomes more dangerous in advanced positions.

Nevertheless, if De Bruyne was stuck in at right back, he’d still be equally as effective as he would anywhere else on the pitch. An ability to play inch-perfect passes from both one yard and 100 yards, his influence on every football match he plays in is indispensable.

While injecting further quality into an already magnificent football team can only make another domestic treble more likely, its implications on the European stage may bear more fruit.

The only disappointing aspect of Pep Guardiola’s reign at the Etihad Stadium to date has been City’s shortcomings in the ?Champions League. While their power on the domestic stage is without doubt, for whatever reason that hasn’t transferred into European competitions.

Last season, defeat to ?Tottenham on aggregate in the quarter finals was the only blotch on an otherwise spotless quilt, weaved together beautifully by the multitude of stars City boast in their ranks. Therefore, in order to leave that elegantly woven tapestry pristine, perhaps just one string is missing.

Kevin De Bruyne.

Already leading the pack for assists this season, few could look past the former Chelsea man scooping the gong for this season. With four already, his set-up for ?Sergio Aguero on the south coast brought his Premier League tally to 50 from just 123 games.

The fastest player to reach that milestone in the competition’s history.

It must be impossible to imagine how Guardiola must feel with such weapons at his disposal. Well, to try and put things into context, imagine having your favourite sports car. Then, imagine being told you will never have to take it for an MOT or pay tax on it.

Why? Because it’s so reliable.

FBL-ENG-PR-TOTTENHAM-MAN CITY

That is what De Bruyne is. Reliable.

And with this City side, who have only strengthened further during the summer window, Guardiola now has a team capable of challenging on every front, both one these shores and not. This machine just got a system update.

This football team just got even better. Be wary, Premier League, be very wary.

Former Liverpool ForwardMichael Owen Insists Jurgen Klopp Prefers Joe Gomez to Joel Matip

?Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has claimed that the Reds manager Jurgen Klopp would prefer to start Joe Gomez ahead of Joel Matip to partner Virgil van Dijk in the Reds defence.

Matip scored the opening goal for Liverpool in their 3-1 win over top-four rivals Arsenal, and kept the potent Gunners attack at bay with relative comfort throughout the game.

The Cameron international also played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph, and shone in the absence of an injured Joe Gomez at the end of last season.

However, former ?Liverpool striker Michael Owen spoke after Liverpool’s win over ?Arsenal, as quoted by the ?Expressstating that he feels that manager Klopp actually prefers English defender Joe Gomez, despite the great performances of Matip.

“Make no mistake, Joe Gomez, Jurgen Klopp wants to have Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk as his centre-half pairing, that’s what he sees,” Owen said.

“But over the last season or so, Matip has just, you can’t hardly drop him, if you do you’re resting him and bringing him straight back in. So full marks to Matip, I mean he’s been absolutely brilliant.”

Joel Matip,Harry Kane

Joe Gomez was a starter in the ?Premier League last campaign and proved to be a great foil to centre back partner Virgil van Dijk but an ankle surgery derailed his season forcing Klopp to start Matip.

The former ?Schalke defender proved to be a worthy replacement with some great performances in his absence, most notably in the Champions League final against ?Tottenham where he managed to grab an assist in a hotly contested affair.

Celtic: Twitter Reacts as Vakoun Bayo Fires Dominant Hoops to Victory Over Hearts

?Celtic picked up an impressive 2-0 win over AIK on Thursday, and they continued their momentum in the Scottish Premiership with a crucial 3-1 win over Hearts on a ludicrously warm day at Celtic Park.

To freshen things up, manager Neil Lennon opted to make a number of changes to his starting lineup, the most notable of which came in the form of new signing Fraser Forster, who returned to the club on loan following five years with Southampton.

Forster wasn’t the only big change as, with Odsonne Edouard rested, 22-year-old Vakoun Issouf Bayo was handed his first start in attack.

It was an electric start to the game, with both sides throwing everything at the other in the sunshine at Paradise. However, it was Celtic who opened the scoring, thanks to some resilient work from Bayo.

The striker’s scrappy finish might have gone down as an own goal in the end, but Celtic fans certainly didn’t care.

??Celtic held on to their 1-0 lead at the half-time interval, and they made it 2-0 soon after the break thanks to Callum McGregor’s stunning strike in the 54th minute.

The Hoops were cruising, and fans knew it.

??Hearts had absolutely no answer, with Craig Levein’s side looking completely out of their depth against the Hoops.

When Bayo bagged his side’s third from close range, Celtic fans were partying, whilst Hearts’ supporters began looking for the nearest exit.

??

Hearts were given a glimmer oh hope left on when they were awarded a penalty following a clumsy challenge by Scott Brown, but Conor Washington’s penalty was well saved by Forster.

However, the excitement didn’t last long as Washington managed to convert the rebound. Game on..?

Game over. Celtic never looked threatened by Hearts, even though the late penalty scare gave them something to think about.

Lennon’s men are right back to the top of the table, but can they stay there?

Bayern Munich: Schalke May Have Been Dispatched But Die Roten Must Improve to Retain Bundesliga

Reigning Bundesliga and DFB Pokal champions Bayern Munich faced Schalke on Saturday at the Veltins Arena, and comfortably dispatched Die Königsblauen 3-0 thanks to a Robert Lewandowski treble.

The Pole has started the league campaign in fine fettle, with five goals in just two matches masking what has been a relatively slow start to the season by Bayern’s standards.

Four points out of a possible six means that Die Roten are not leading the Bundesliga and whenever that it is the case, most fans think Bayern are in a crisis?. However, it could end up being like that with the signs not all pointing in the right direction – as of yet.

Niko Kovac

Manager Niko Kovac has had a year at the helm but it still seems he has not settled into one specific system and an obvious playing identity.

?Bayern are in somewhat of a transitional period after losing club legends Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Rafinha, as well as turfing out Mats Hummels in a bid to liven up their ageing squad.

To compensate, Lucas Hernandez, Benjamin Pavard, Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Perisic have arrived, but they will need time to adapt to the Bundesliga, the city and the club. Throw into the mix the fact that Corentin Tolisso has just returned to full fitness after a season out of action, and you begin to understand that patience may be needed.

That being said, there are some fundamental issues that Kovac needs to solve that were very evident against ?Schalke and in their previous fixture against Hertha Berlin.

Against Schalke, Bayern were unable to muster up clear cut chances despite, scoring three goals. Individual brilliance from Lewandowski bailed them out as he scored from the penalty spot and a sensational free-kick which sailed into the top corner.

The last goal was a great counter-attack, but Schalke were exposed after committing bodies forward – it wasn’t hard. That alongside a Tolisso half volley were the only good opportunities that Kovac’s side were able to create, despite having Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, Thomas Müller and Joshua Kimmich among their midfield ranks.

Thomas Mueller,Robert Lewandowski,Kingsley Coman,Corentin Tolisso

In their 2-2 draw against Hertha, it was a somewhat similar scenario. Thiago, who was injured for the Schalke match, featured against Hertha and was at the heart of everything Bayern created.

With such talented players at their disposal, the disheartening nature of Bayern’s inability to carve out opportunities will frustrate even the most devout of fans.

With Bayern being so lacklustre in front of goal, you would expect their defence to be solid at least. Unfortunately, that is not the case either for the Bavarian faithful, as they appear susceptible to the counter. Schalke, Hertha and rivals ?Borussia Dortmund have all carved open Bayern at various points, but only BVB, in the DFL Supercup, have taken their opportunities.

Kovac and new Bayern assistant Hansi Flick tested a new system against Schalke which resembled a 3-2-2-3 with Pavard, Niklas Sule and Hernandez in the heart of defence, with Kimmich and David Alaba ahead of them in central midfield.

However, it did not have the desired effect of dominating proceedings – as Schalke managed to bypass the midfield into acres of space countless amount of times.

Joshua Kimmich,Weston McKennie

Bayern were lucky that they were facing opposition in Die Knappen who lacked a cutting edge and quality, but had they faced better opposition, it would have been likely that Die Roten would have conceded at least twice. With Kimmich in midfield as a ‘number six’, Bayern were unable to create from deep or have any great protection in defence.

The performance also demonstrated their over-reliance on Thiago, as well as the quality he possesses. Last season, the Spaniard was among Bayern’s best performers, alongside Gnabry and Lewandowski.

His brilliance in getting out of tight spaces and opposition pressing with his flawless trickery and touch gave Bayern a huge numbers advantage in their attack last season, which resulted in a huge number of chances being created.

But Kovac knows he has an issue. He’s asked the board for a new ‘number six’ this summer, and sanctioned the departure of Renato Sanches. Marc Roja was touted as a possible replacement, but reports suggest that Bayern will look elsewhere – instead opting for a player in the mould of Javi Martinez and similarly capable as ?Liverpool’s Fabinho for example.

FBL-EUR-C1-LIVERPOOL-BAYERN

With a week left of the European transfer window, a transfer does look quite unlikely though. If that’s the case, Kovac will likely need to revert to his preferred 4-3-3 formation, if he’s to have any chance of maintaining stability and pushing towards the club’s desired success in the Champions League.

Right now, though, the Bundesliga title seems far from a certainty. Rivals Borussia Dortmund are looking ferocious in attack, and will have learnt many things about themselves after throwing away the title last season.

Bayern will know that they have a lot to work on from their opening few performances, and they must learn to tighten up when they concede possession. Yes, they have the best squad in the league, but they shouldn’t overlook anybody this season, if their defending so far is anything to go by.

Leon Goretzka,Julian Weigl

The German giants rely heavily on individual brilliance and have structural flaws in both attack and defence. In a time where systems and styles win the big titles over individual brilliance- à la Liverpool over ?Barcelona– Bayern’s star-studded line-up look lost and out of ideas.

Much work to do for Kovac and co, but it won’t be a boring watch that’s for sure.
