Daniel James Explains How He Stays Positive Despite Dark Times at Manchester United

?Daniel James has given an insight into his early career at Old Trafford during a candid interview with Manchester United’s social media team.

After breaking into the Swansea City first-team at the start of last season, the Welshman received countless plaudits for his virtuoso displays in the Championship. The Red Devils – and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in particular – were mightily impressed with James’ abilities, forking out £15m plus add-ons to secure his services in the summer.

Though the side have endured their worst ever start to a ?Premier League campaign, the 21-year-old has been a shining light, netting three goals in a thrilling start to life with ?United.

Asked about the mentality with which he approaches matches, James told the ?club’s website: “When you are going into the game and that one-v-one battle [with the full-back], you’ve got to believe you’re going to win it.

“You could lose a ball nine times out of ten, but it’s important to get the ball again and be confident to be able to go on, because that one opportunity where you do get past them, you could score a goal or make an assist. So, I think, over time, I’ve learned.

Sometimes, I’ve been a bit down, do you know what I mean, when they tackle me four out of five times. But, I’ve been told by a lot of people to just keep going, so that is what I will always do, no matter what happens in the game.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

You know you’re going to get hard knocks if you go past players,” he explained. “If you let that get to you, they’ve won their battle really. If I don’t want to get on the ball again, that’s them winning.

“Even if I’m tired in a game, I feel like probably they are more tired than me. So, it’s important to keep getting at them. Obviously, the manager always encourages me to do that as well.

That tolerance is something I’ve built up and it’s so important. I mean, you’ve got to get make yourself right, eat right and do the right things to be ready for the next game.”

?
?The Old Trafford crowd have generally been pleased with James performances thus far, with the winger saying of his new supporters: “
I think, after the great wingers [we’ve had], you can hear them as soon as you start running with the ball.

“They get right behind you and it’s something you love to hear as a winger. You want to get people off their seats.”

Twitter Reacts as Hugo Lloris Injury Mars Tottenham Implosion on the Road to Brilliant Brighton

Tottenham failed to bounce back after their humbling loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday, suffering ?back-to-back defeats for the first time since April after losing on the road to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The narrative was already set for Brighton to cause an upset

Mauricio Pochettino’s side got off to the worst possible start on the south coast when Hugo Lloris dropped a simple cross to give Brighton’s Neal Maupay a simple tap-in inside the opening three minutes.

??

Joy quickly turned to concern for Brighton though, as Lloris’ awkward landing left him stricken on the ground with what looked on first viewing to be a season-ending injury.

The France international needed five minutes of treatment, offering a reminder that some things really are bigger than what happens on the pitch, and Lloris was eventually given a standing ovation off the pitch.

??

Things went from bad to worse for Tottenham just before half-time as 19-year-old Aaron Connolly, making his first-ever start in the Premier League, reacted the quickest to double Brighton’s lead.

The striker saw his initial effort saved by substitute goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, but Connolly was on his toes and opened his top-flight account with what will surely be one of the easiest goals of his career.

??

Tottenham came out of the half-time break with the wind in their sails and for the first time in the match were able to put some sustained pressure on Brighton, but the balance on the match swung back in hosts’ favour before too long.

And as soon as it did, Connolly stepped up once again to add to Tottenham’s misery with a stunning solo goal – almost identical to Serge Gnabry’s first for Bayern Munich in midweek.

??

Tottenham pushed during the latter stages of the match to try and get at least one goal to their name, but Matt Ryan was in inspired form to keep his clean sheet intact.

It’s left Tottenham without an away win in the Premier League since January.

Brighton, on the other hand, picked up their first win against the so-called ‘big six’ since August 2018, scoring more goals in 90 minutes against Tottenham than they’d managed in their previous six games in the Premier League.

Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier & the Problem With Spurs Pinning Their Hopes on Masters of None

From the AMEX – ?Most Tottenham fans know what a horrific start to a game looks like.

Whether that be Jesus Navas lobbing one in at the Etihad, Ousmane Dembele streaking through at Camp Nou or Neal Maupay tapping in at the AMEX, the reaction from most Spurs supporters is a resigned shrug. They’ve seen it all before. It’s nothing new.

However, there’s a sense that things have changed over the past year or so. At least when Tottenham concede first, that is.

It’s the sense that something is broken. Crocked. Synonym.

That sense was made real in a very quick, graphic style on Saturday, as Hugo Lloris dropped the ball on his line, fell awkwardly and suffered a horrific injury to his left arm. For the squeamish, don’t look for it. Avoid it. Run from it.

Maupay was on hand to stick the rebound in before Lloris was stretchered off, having received oxygen before being carried down the tunnel. Evidently rattled by ?Brighton playing with the combined energy of 500 cheetahs, it wasn’t surprising to see the hosts grab another as Aaron Connolly poached a goal after Paulo Gazzaniga had initially kept out the Irishman’s flick.

How does a team get into a rut like ?Tottenham have found themselves in?

Well, for starters, there was no balance anywhere in their team on Saturday. Brighton’s two goals in the first half came down the right-hand side, and whilst both Lloris and Gazzaniga could have done better in each scenario, the not-a-right-back Moussa Sissoko playing right-back ensured both situations were exploited clinically by Brighton.

What was perhaps more interesting in the buildup to Saturday’s game was the clamour for Mauricio Pochettino to start Eric Dier.

Fans were forthright in their opinion that Dier could provide such much-needed steel to a team that certainly has been lacking in aggression so far this season.

A couple of years ago, Dier had his clear strengths. He was a strong passer who could mop up loose ball in central midfield. Bread and butter stuff. Simple, yet efficient.

Now, who knows what he gives to the team. Yes, by all means he’s an established England international who has struggled with injuries, and yes he deserves a chance in the team, but Spurs need as many players comfortable in tight spaces in midfield as possible.

FBL-ENG-PR-BRIGHTON-TOTTENHAM

Currently, they only have two in their squad: one, Harry Winks, who was tortured all Tuesday night by Philippe Coutinho during that loss to Bayern Munich, and Giovani Lo Celso, who’s only made a few substitute appearances and is currently out injured. The jury’s still out on Tanguy Ndombele, but he does love to bounce the ball off his shins every once in a while.

The bottom line is painfully straightforward, from this game at least: Tottenham won’t win games of football if tactically inept decisions continue being made. Brighton’s high-energy pressing made them an absolute nightmare for Spurs, such was the visitors’ reluctance to match that commitment.

Heung-Min Son,Erik Lamela

As for Pochettino, who knows what the next few days will hold. Tottenham can’t bring in any fresh faces until January, so any new coach would have the same problems to deal with. The squad undoubtedly needs decimating one way or another, and it’s a problem that just can’t be figured out inside 600 words.

Just take me back to 2017. Or Manchester. Or Amsterdam. Or to when Tottenham were bad and knew their level. I don’t like this dark place. It smells of horse excrement and I don’t like it.

Leonardo Bonucci Sings Praises of Antonio Conte Ahead of Sunday’s Derby d’Italia

?Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci has heaped praise on his former manager Antonio Conte as the pair prepare to be reunited on Sunday.

Conte enjoyed a fine period of success at Juventus between 2011-2014, winning three league titles in three years and going the entire 2011/12 season unbeaten. The Italian returned to domestic Italian football in May when he was appointed Inter boss, and his side currently sit top of Serie A, two points above former side Juventus.

Bonucci was an integral part of the ?Juventus side that dominated Italian football during the former Chelsea manager’s tenure as one member of the trademark Conte back three. He has spoken about the joys of playing under the Italian ahead of Sunday’s hotly anticipated top of the table clash.

In an interview with ?Sky Sport Italia, Bonucci said: “What Conte gave me was hunger, the desire to never give in, the mentality that allows you to go beyond pain to reach your objectives.

“He drilled that into us from the first day. Conte was perfect for that Juventus: he needed a chance with a big club and we had to get back to being great after Calciopoli. We needed someone like him, who could make us understand what it meant to wear that jersey.

This is the first time Conte has come up against Juventus in a competitive fixture since he departed for the national team job in 2014. He will face another former Chelsea boss in the opposition dugout, with Maurizio Sarri occupying his old role.

The Juventus manager is famously a relentless tactician, and Bonucci admitted that the squad are still adjusting to their new footballing philosophy.

Maurizio Sarri,Antonio Conte

“This season, we defend zonally in space. At the start, we had to overcome some difficulties but we’re working well now: our growth won’t end here.”

Like his former manager Conte, Bonucci has been employed by both ?Inter and Juventus, although he only played one Serie A game (in 2006) for the Milan side across a couple of spells – and left for a season at AC Milan in 2017.

“What matters most of all at Juve is the sense of belonging,” he insisted, “the attachment to the shirt.

“Coming back here empowered me as a man: when you leave this club, you realise what you’ve lost. Embracing them again gave me indescribable joy.”

Hugo Lloris Stretchered Off With Horror Arm Injury While Conceding Shambolic Brighton Opener

?Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was stretchered off during the side’s Premier League meeting with Brighton after yet another howler from the Frenchman handed Neal Maupay the easiest of goals.

Three minutes into the encounter on Saturday afternoon, the 32-year-old collected an in-swinging cross from the Seagulls’ Pascal Groß. However, Lloris quickly began to stumble backwards towards the goalline, dropping the ball at the feet of a grateful Maupay, who duly netted from point-blank range.

Hugo Lloris

It is unclear how long ?Spurs’ captain will be unavailable, though the five minutes of treatment he received at the Amex Stadium (and subsequent hospitalisation) mean he may have to wait a considerable length of time before his next Lilywhites outing.

Plenty of attention was payed to Lloris’ arm following his costly mistake, with images showing the limb in question bent very much in a way that arms – traditionally – don’t bend.

His understudy Paulo Gazzaniga came on as a replacement once medics decided it was safe to remove the first-choice from the field. However, the Argentine was unable to prevent Aaron Connolly from doubling the hosts’ lead as half-time drew near.

The World Cup winner’s latest error comes in the midst of a crisis at Tottenham, with coach Mauricio Pochettino coming under increasing pressure following a woeful run of results.

FBL-EUR-C1-TOTTENHAM-BAYERN MUNICH

?Bayern Munich demolished them 7-2 in the ?Champions League on Wednesday, that harrowing loss seeing the Lilywhites fall to a fifth defeat in all competitions this season.

They were, however, victorious in their last ?Premier League fixture before the meeting with ?Brighton, despite Lloris’ incredible error of judgement and a Serge Aurier red card threatening to derail them against ?Southampton.

The shot-stopper has conceded 11 goals in the top-flight in 2019/20, with only six other sides having a worse record thus far.

Nevertheless, his wayward form is just one of numerous issues currently plaguing Pochettino, who has cut a forlorn figure on the touchline for the majority of the campaign.
