Nemanja Matic ‘Hopes’ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Stays at Man Utd After Overseeing Upturn in Form

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has admitted he ‘hopes’ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his backroom staff remain at the club beyond this season after overseeing an upturn in the Red Devils’ fortunes.

Solskjaer has won 14 of his 19 games in charge in all competitions since his appointment in December, which has seen the Red Devils move to within two points of the Premier League’s top four as well as reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they’ve been drawn to play Barcelona.

The former ?United striker has certainly lifted the mood around Old Trafford as well as improve performances on the field, with ?Matic hoping to see Solskjaer, and his backroom staff of Mike Phelan, Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna, stay at the club beyond this season.

Speaking to ?ESPN, he said: “I think he is a great manager. But you have to say also that with Mike, Michael and Kieran, they work very well together. They work as a team. It is not only Ole.

“There are people behind him who help us. I will be happy if he stays, and I hope he will.”

The 30-year-old has been one of the beneficiaries of the Norwegian’s arrival at the back end of 2018, with his performances notably improving as part of a midfield three alongside Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera, compared to his displays under former boss Jose Mourinho during the early parts of the season.

Matic has put that down to the man-management skills of Solskjaer, who constantly goes through video footage to highlight areas for improvement, which could become a more regular occurrence after ?reports emerged he’s set to be offered the United job on a full-time basis ‘this week’.

The Serbian international added: “He asked me to play more forward and to play my game.

Every game, he has showed my some videos of what I did well and what I can improve. I’m trying to do what he wants from me.”

Juventus Join Premier League Trio in Hunt for Fiorentina Winger Federico Chiesa

?Juventus have joined Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool in the hunt for highly rated Fiorentina winger Federico Chiesa, son of former Italy striker Enrico Chiesa.

The 21-year-old has been scouted by a number of European sides this season after netting 12 times in 31 league and cup outings, prompting links to the aforementioned Premier League trio as well as clubs in his native Italy.

According to ?Goal, one such club is Juventus, who would like to keep the forward in Serie A, ahead of ?Liverpool, ?United and ?Chelsea – while La Liga side ?Real Madrid have also been credited with an interest this term.

The Old Lady are reportedly readying a bid for the youngster, hoping to seal a similar move to the one they secured for Federico Bernardeschi, who made the switch from La Viola to I Bianconeri for €40m in July 2017.

However, should the fierce rivals complete another deal, it would require a substantial bid from ?Juventus, with Fiorentina holding out for nearer €60-€70m for their rising star. That said, no formal approach has been made thus far, with the ?Serie A champions happy to let any potential transfer take its natural course and see how the market develops.

Federico Chiesa

It is thought that should Juventus want to strike a deal for the Italian they must first see some players leave the exit doors at the Allianz Stadium, with outgoings fundamental for any potential incomings to occur. Rumours continue to circulate surrounding the respective futures of Douglas Costa and ?Paulo Dybala in Turin, as neither player is certain of a place in Massimiliano Allegri’s side next season.

Joe Cole Full of Praise for West Ham Starlet Declan Rice Following His England Debut

?Former England international Joe Cole was seriously impressed by Declan Rice, who was made his first start for the Three Lions against Montenegro on Monday night.

The 20-year-old West Ham midfielder made his debut on Friday night at Wembley, playing 30 minutes in England’s 5-0 win over the Czech Republic.

But Rice showed a maturity beyond his years during his sides 5-1 win in Montenegro, as he replaced Jordan Henderson and was a good link between the defence and midfield.

“Yeah he is a centre-half by trade, you can see that,” Cole said on ITV’s coverage of the match, as quoted by Foreverwestham.com.

“He wants to sniff out the danger, he’s not interested in getting in there and trying to look like Pirlo.”

Like Rice, Cole also came through the West Ham youth academy, and he added: “He is very good technically, he knits the game together and maybe the people at home might not see what he does well, what we’re seeing here.

“But he’s giving us the chance to counter.”

Rice has seriously impressed Hammers fans and anyone who has seen his performances this season. The holding midfielder has played 28 times this season for West Ham, scoring twice.

His debut followed a long a controversial debate over which country Rice would represent, who despite being born in Kingston upon Thames, has represented the Republic of Ireland 20 times at youth level, and even won three senior caps for the Irish.

England fans will be very thankful that Rice has chosen to play in white rather than green, and he joins a growing list of exciting young players Gareth Southgate can call upon for next summer’s European Championship.

Why Selling Naby Keita This Summer Would Be a Disastrous Step in the Wrong Direction for Liverpool

After a bitterly disappointing debut season in the Premier League, Liverpool’s Naby Keita is already being linked with a potential move away from Anfield in the summer transfer window.

The Guinean midfielder arrived with a big reputation and an even bigger price tag – £52m – after he shined during RB Leipzig’s remarkable second place finish in the Bundesliga in 2016/17.

Naby Keita

?Liverpool initially agreed a deal in 2017, but had to wait until last summer before they were able to welcome the 24-year-old to the club. However, going off his performances so far this season, the wait was hardly worth it.

He has made 27 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side so far this season, but has registered just one assist and is yet to score his first goal for the club. His lack of form has also cost him a regular spot in Liverpool’s starting XI and, with just six starts to his name in 2019, question marks are understandably being raised over his future with the Reds.

Despite all that, if Klopp was to call time on ?Keita’s Liverpool career after just one season, then it could prove to be a disastrous step in the wrong direction.

Naby Keita,Marc Albrighton

?In flashes, Keita has shown exactly what he is capable of achieving with Liverpool, putting in decent performances against the likes of West Ham and Bournemouth. Admittedly, those showings have been too few and far between to warrant a regular starting XI spot, but the signs are still there.

When Liverpool signed Keita, they thought they would be investing in an area in which they were sorely lacking – a progressive midfielder who is unafraid of taking a few risks in order to speed up the transition from defence to attack. On his day, Keita has the ability to do exactly that, stretching opposing teams with impressive footwork and explosive acceleration.

With the exception of ?Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – who has been absent all season through injury – Keita is the only midfielder at the club who is capable of adding a spark in the middle of the park. The combined tally of goals and assists for the rest of Liverpool’s regular midfielders is testament to the fact that they need more creativity from central areas if they are to ease the burden on their front three.

So far it obviously hasn’t been clicking for Keita, but it’s important to remember the fact that he hasn’t been plucked from the lower leagues, or is a player without the right sort of experience of playing at the highest level.

As is the case with so many ?Premier League debutantes, it was the intensity of the English game that caught Keita by surprise rather than the quality of the football and, as he revealed to Liverpool’s ?official website last month, that’s always something that can be worked on.

“It’s a lot faster here,” he said. “The style of play is a lot more aggressive and the intensity of the game is really high in relation to Germany. That’s fine, I’m now part of it, this is the league I’m playing in. I’m just going to keep working hard.

“The German league is decent as well, it’s one of the best. Nothing is easy in football, it’s just about the business of working hard. Every game you play, you do your best.”

Keita’s qualities aside, it is important to remember that Liverpool stand a lot to lose if they sanction his sale this summer.

Granted, if he continues to underwhelm then his value is only likely to fall, but the Reds would already be guaranteed to make a loss if they let him off the book this summer, so why not give him at least another season to see how much he can improve?

FBL-ENG-PR-TOTTENHAM-LIVERPOOL

What’s more, selling him will inevitably mean that they will be under a huge amount of pressure to find a suitable replacement. Clubs will be well aware of that fact and will most likely respond by adding a premium to their players in an attempt to squeeze as much money out of the Reds as possible.

Plenty of other areas require more attention this summer, such as a striker to provide some competition for ?Roberto Firmino and a left-back to act as cover for Andy Robertson, so selling Keita would prove to be rather irresponsible in the grand scheme of things.

FBL-ENG-PR-LIVERPOOL-WEST HAM

Knowing Klopp, it’s unlikely that there is going to be an issue in the summer. He’s rarely made a poor signing since he took over the reigns at Anfield in 2015 and he hasn’t been one to give up on any of his players without justification.

After all, we only have to think back to December when Fabinho was being heavily linked with a January move to PSG after he struggled to settle at Liverpool during the early months of the season. For Liverpool’s sake, they’ll have to hope that the rumours surrounding Keita turn out the same way.

Antoine Griezmann or Luka Jovic: Which Player Should Barcelona Sign This Summer?

?Barcelona are widely reported to be keen on signing Serbian forward Luka Jovic this summer, with recently rumours claiming that the Catalans are prepared to pay €50m for the 21-year-old.

At the same time, however, the Antoine Griezmann saga is threatening to begin again after claims the French star regrets his decision to snub Barça last year and could yet wind up making the big money switch from Atletico Madrid to Camp Nou after all.

Chances are, Barça would only sign one rather than both, but which might be the better deal?

Antoine Griezmann

?What Griezmann represents is proven quality and a player at his peak. This is an individual who scored a minimum of 25 goals in all competitions in each of his first four seasons with Atletico – the 2018/19 campaign might be the first time he misses that milestone.

He is already playing in La Liga and is well used to Spanish football after making his debut for Real Sociedad back in 2009. He also knows what it is like at the highest level in Europe after reaching the 2016 Champions League final and winning the Europa League in 2018.

Antoine Griezmann

On the international stage, Griezmann was France’s star man en-route to the final of Euro 2016, while he went one better last year by winning the World Cup. He has also twice finished third in the Ballon d’Or standings, in 2016 and 2018, affirming his place as one of the best in the world.

Even the price, potentially north of €100m, may not be a deal breaker if Barça find a buyer for the disappointing Philippe Coutinho. That would also free up the club’s number seven shirt for Griezmann to wear at Camp Nou, his preferred jersey.

However, despite the obvious pros, there are several cons for Barça over Griezmann.

Antoine Griezmann

With Luis Suarez set to turn 33 years of age next season, the time has come to think about a replacement. But having just celebrated his 28th birthday, Griezmann is more short-term than long-term. That being said, Barça actually signed Suarez when he was already halfway to 28.

Perhaps more importantly, last summer’s saga, ending with ‘La Decision’, a quite ridiculous documentary broadcasting Griezmann’s choice to ultimately stay with Atletico was hugely embarrassing for Barça. They must think long and hard about whether they really want to sign a player who publicly humiliated them less than 12 months ago.

Then there is the question of a potential clash of personalities. Griezmann carries himself as a superstar, that much is clear from ‘La Decision’ and the newly released ‘Antoine Griezmann: The Making of a Legend’ on Netflix. But it spells danger if Lionel Messi doesn’t approve of the circus that would accompany his arrival. The Argentine is the king of Barcelona and there isn’t room for another – as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Neymar have both found out in the past.

Luka Jovic

?The concerns over Griezmann actually aid Jovic. At 21, the youngster has his whole career ahead of him and would be the long-term investment that Barça more likely need at this moment in time. As a far lower profile emerging talent, the chances of clashing with Messi are much less.

Jovic, of course, hasn’t previously flirted with and embarrassed Barça either.

Luka Jovic

Potentially half the price of Griezmann or less, Jovic offers an incredible investment for the club and could actually be worth far more than the Frenchman in future as the transfer market continues to inflate at a rapid rate. Right now, the youngster is being talked about as a €50m player, but in five or six years he could easily be worth €300m if he is a success.

For Jovic that ‘if’ is the important thing to consider.

Where Griezmann is proven in Spain and in Europe, Jovic simply isn’t.

The young Serb has enjoyed a fantastic breakout season with Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring 22 goals in all competitions. His form has helped Frankfurt play their way into contention to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since playing in the iconic 1960 European Cup final, while Robert Lewandowski is the only player to have scored more in the Bundesliga this season.

Luka Jovic

But Jovic is still only just starting out. Having initially made his senior bow for Red Star Belgrade as a 16-year-old back in 2014, this season in Germany is only his second in one of Europe’s top five leagues. It is perhaps also worth noting that he played just four first team games at Benfica, with the Portuguese giants agreeing a permanent option with Frankfurt, set to be activated this summer, worth €7m. They can’t have thought too highly to allow him to be sold so cheaply.

Barça must be sure Jovic can replicate his form next season and continue to develop, rather than fade away as a one-season wonder or flash in the pan. Ukrainian defender Dmytro Chygrynskiy famously proved to be a flop in 2009, for example, while Paco Alcacer, someone who had at least already played in Spain, also wasn’t up to the required standard.

Which One?

In the short-term, Barça might experience a more immediate impact were they to sign Griezmann, but that is all it would be.

But it is also not without risks and, given the money involved, they would probably be better off backing the judgement that has made Jovic their reported number one target in the first place and keeping at least one eye fixed firmly on the long-term future.
