Romain Saiss extends Wolverhampton Wanderers stay until 2021

Wolverhampton Wanders have announced that midfielder Romain Saiss has signed a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2021.

The 28-year-old joins Conor Coady and Matt Doherty as the third player to commit his future to the club this month as Nuno Espirito Santo continues to build his squad for the future.

Saiss joined Wolves from Angers in 2016 and played a key role in their Championship triumph and promotion to the Premier League last season.

The Morocco international, scorer of two goals this season, did not start a Premier League game until November 30 [vs. Cardiff City] but has gone on to 18 appearances in all competitions this campaign.

With Wolverhampton Wanderers presently placed seventh in the topflight log, the midfielder is hoping to feature in the biggest stage in European club football.

“In the future, maybe playing European football with my club, maybe Champions League, Europa League, and win the African Cup with my country – that would be perfect,” Saiss told club website.

“But I’m very happy now because I’ve done a lot of things since I started football. I thank God for what he has given me and if he can give me more I will take it.

“I’m very happy and I hope we can do something great with this club because we have a fantastic team and very good fans, so everything is here to do something great, now we have to do it.”

Inter ‘very close’ to sealing Godin switch, confirms Marotta

Inter are “very close” to confirming a deal for Atletico Madrid defender and captain Diego Godin, according to Nerazzurri CEO Giuseppe Marotta.

Uruguay international Godin has been linked consistently with a move from La Liga to the San Siro in recent months, with the switch apparently now all but confirmed by the former Juventus official.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of his side’s Europa League clash with Rapid Vienna, Marotta revealed that it is only a matter of time before the 33-year-old arrives at the club.

“We are very close to closing the deal,” the 61-year-old stated. “Soon, an official announcement will come.”

Godin starred on Wednesday night for Atletico as he notched the second of two late goals to hand his side a vital Champions League advantage against Juventus with a 2-0 win against the Scudetto holders.

His heroics against Inter’s domestic rivals did not go unnoticed in Italy either, with fans turning up for Thursday’s game sporting the centre-back’s name on their shirts.

Initially arriving in Europe in 2007 with fellow Spanish side Villarreal, Godin has played his entire domestic career since in the country, having made the switch to Wanda Metropolitano in 2010.

Under Diego Simeone, he has helped transform Atletico into one of La Liga’s heavyweight sides, enjoying success both at home and abroad, with a domestic title and two Europa League winners’ medals to his name.

De Jong excited to join ‘greatest player ever’ Messi at Barcelona

Frenkie de Jong is relishing the opportunity to play with “the greatest player ever” Lionel Messi after sealing his dream move to Barcelona.

Barca secured the Ajax star in a €75 million (£65m/$85m) deal in January , with De Jong set to join his new team-mates at Camp Nou in the summer for the start of the 2019-2020 campaign.

The 21-year-old has attracted attention following a string of impressive performances in Ajax’s midfield, and he is now keen to take his career to the next level alongside the Argentina international.

“I am excited [to play with Messi], I’m looking forward to it,” the 21-year-old told Barcelona’s official website . “In my opinion, he is the greatest player ever.

“It’s difficult to define him. I think he is the most complete player. He can do everything with the ball and without, he creates a lot of chances, his left foot is amazing and he’s so smart, just from another level.”

De Jong was linked with several clubs and revealed he spoke to both Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City before the switch, but says Barcelona was his ideal destination.

“I always dreamed of Barca as a kid. I just wanted to play for Barca,” he said. “I liked the players, I liked the style. I think Barca is a bit of my dream club.

“My dream is to become an important player for Barcelona, I hope I can become a starter, and to win a lot of trophies with Barcelona. Those are my goals at the moment.”

And De Jong believes he has joined the strongest league in world football as he prepares for life in La Liga.

“I think the level of the competition is really, really high,” he added. “Most people say the Premier League is the strongest league, but I’m doubting it.

“I think the level of the technique of the players in La Liga is a bit higher. The Premier League is more intense, of course, but La Liga is a really strong league. When I have time, I watch almost all of the games.”

De Jong has made 71 appearances for Ajax and has registered six goals. He has also earned five Dutch caps since making his debut in June 2018.

Chicharito will have no shortage of options if he wants out of West Ham – Kanoute

Javier Hernandez may look for a move away from West Ham this summer, with Frederic Kanoute telling Goal that he will have no shortage of options if he does head for the exits.

The Mexico international is a proven Premier League goalscorer and was considered to be quite a coup for the Hammers when snapped up for £16 million ($21m) from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2017.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid frontman has, however, managed just 13 goals while at the London Stadium after seeing regular starts hard to come by.

Manuel Pellegrini has offered him only nine in the English top-flight this season, with half of the 30-year-old’s outings in 2018-19 having come from off the bench.

Ex-West Ham striker Kanoute, speaking courtesy of Enterprise-Rent-A-Car, told Goal of Chicharito’s lack of game time: “He’s a striker that I like. He’s proven his quality over the years with big clubs. I guess the coach sees it otherwise.

“He knows the players better than me. It might be surprising because of his name and the quality of striker that he is but the coach knows his team better than anyone. The most important thing is that the team works and hopefully that is what will happen.”

Quizzed on whether Hernandez may need a change of scenery during the next window, with transfer talk having already surfaced, Kanoute added: “He might want to move.

“He might have some discussions with the club to see what they want to do with him and what he wants to do. I feel that he is going to have options if he is going to move in the summer.”

While Hernandez may soon be among those heading out of West Ham, the club have worked hard to retain the services of Marko Arnautovic.

A lucrative switch to China appeared to be on the cards at one stage in January, but the Austria international was made aware that no sale would be sanctioned and eventually committed to a new contract.

On the importance of the enigmatic 29-year-old staying put, Kanoute said: “It was crucial for them to keep this level of player and bring in a few new ones that can bring that extra quality which is needed for a club like West Ham.

“It was very important for them to keep him and hopefully they can be a little bit higher in the table in the second part of the season.”

Keeping Arnautovic could prove crucial to the West Ham cause, but there are other deals to be done.

Samir Nasri West Ham Arsenal

One of those is likely to involve Samir Nasri, with the former Arsenal and Manchester City playmaker having been taken on a short-term contract after serving a doping ban.

The 31-year-old Frenchman has impressed during his time in east London and is expected to enter into discussions regarding an extended stay.

“He’s a fantastic player,” said Kanoute. “He’s been at top clubs and has great quality. Hopefully now he can show the Hammers all of his talent and find stability at this club to give a new start to his career as well.”

Hernandez, Arnautovic, Nasri and Co are due back in Premier League action on Friday when West Ham take in a derby date with Fulham.

Nantes grant Cardiff extension over Sala payment, Warnock confirms

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock says the club have been given more time by Nantes to pay the first part of the transfer fee for Emiliano Sala.

Sala became Cardiff’s record signing when he joined the Premier League club for a reported £15million ($20m) last month, but the striker tragically died in a plane crash before making an appearance.

Chairman Mehmet Dalman has promised the club will be “honourable” over the deal but said they want to investigate “anomalies” in the transfer before making a payment.

And Warnock sought to clear up the matter when he spoke to the media on Thursday ahead of Cardiff hosting Watford in the Premier League.

“I think there’s been a lot of stuff written – and I know people have got jobs to do – and people are surmising things,” he told reporters.

“I’ve known Mehmet Dalman and he’ll do it in the right way. They’ve asked for an extension and Nantes have allowed it.

“I’ve got confidence in Mehmet to come to a conclusion. Certain things have been done which shouldn’t have been done – certain things shouldn’t have come out [in the media].

“All I can talk about is the football side. I’m convinced Mehmet will bring this to a conclusion.”

Warnock attended Sala’s funeral in Argentina last weekend and he said it was an emotional experience.

“They’re a very close-knit community,” he added. “Everybody came to the wake in the local village hall. I’ve never seen anything like it.

“People coming up to the mother, I don’t know how she coped. They were talking about when he was four years old, seven years old. She was crying her eyes out, but I think she had a bit of closure.

“It was the right thing to do, but it was an experience to see the emotion from everyone. The press were there from every country.”

While those in Wales and Argentina are still trying to come to terms with the loss of Sala, the search for 28-year-old pilot David Ibbotson continues.

Ibbotson was flying the helicopter on January 21 when it crashed, and rescue teams are still yet to recover his body.
